Green might seem like a tricky colour to pull off, but follow a few basic rules and it needn’t be daunting. If you’re mixing your greens, stick to similar tones: cooler hues like mint, seafoam and pistachio work well together, as do warmer shades like khaki, olive and basil. On the other hand, a combination of pea, neon and fern might get you noticed for all the wrong reasons.
There’s one sure-fire way to make green sing, and that’s by pairing it with contrasting colour accessories – like a roomy pink tote bag. On the colour wheel, greens sit directly opposite orange, pink and red (though we’d perhaps steer clear of the latter if you don’t want to look like the holidays came early). Punchy pink looks great with shamrock green, while juicy oranges set off the cooler tones of mint or sage. If you’re still feeling the chill, try green pants with an oversized pink hoodie – comfort and style, all in one.
If a pared-back palette is more your style, muted greens work brilliantly with black, cream, tan, white and grey. Take your work wardrobe up a notch by teaming a soft khaki jumpsuit or floaty forest green dress with chunky black boots or a sea-green shirt with black pants and sneakers or funky flats. Add a cosy oversized camel coat if temperatures drop on your daily walk. Come the weekend, you can’t go wrong with a pure cashmere sweater and jeans.
Keen to dip your toe into the trend? Give statement accessories the green light. From mint leather gloves spotted at Rodarte to neon lime strappy courts at Area and hints of pretty khaki lingerie at Victoria Beckham, green finishing touches are big news this season. Try pairing a racing green cross-body purse with a retro-inspired tweed blazer. Give your look a subtle spin with scarves, earrings or a belt, and when you’re ready to take the trend up a notch, just remember to stick to similar tones and you can’t go wrong.
