Make Mother’s Day special with these table-setting ideas from Laura Jackson, founder of supper club podcast Hoste London

In these times of uncertainty, mealtimes – including upcoming Mother’s Day – are even more important, an opportunity to create something memorable and positive. It’s not about what you’re cooking, it’s about the experience and personal touches. Lighting is important: a candle makes things atmospheric and ones in different hues will change the look of the whole table. Be playful with coloured tumblers, while glasses have many uses – from tea light holders to dessert coupes. Write place names, illustrate menus and, if you have a paper tablecloth, get the kids to make it their own. Even if you’re having leftovers, put things on platters or arrange in bowls with a sprinkling of herbs or drizzle of oil to give them a new lease of life.
