THE SPRING/SUMMER TRENDS GUIDE

Translate the runway’s most wanted looks to your everyday wardrobe with our fashion trends for the new season. From alfresco-ready floral printed dresses to top-to-toe white outfits, your spring/summer wish list starts here

The nineties redux

Fashion’s love affair with all things nineties continues this spring, with oversized earrings, cargo pants, chain belts, cropped tops and mini skirts returning as street-style staples. For a softer take on the grunge look, team a vintage-inspired floral midi dress with a bucket hat and chunky flatform sandals. Effortlessly on-point, it’s an outfit to take you from the school run to the park, while nodding to styles from iconic movies, such as Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You.

New bohemia

If the noughties were more your era, you’ll be pleased to know that Y2K style is also having a major revival, with the ‘Y2K aesthetic’ hashtag clocking up more than a million posts on Instagram. Take your style cues from Sienna Miller’s much emulated boho-chic outfits circa 2004, which blended King’s Road ‘haute hippie’ staples (think fringed waistcoats, globe-trotting sandals and tiered midi skirts) with noughties silhouettes – yes, low-rise jeans, we’re looking at you. Tap into these fashion trends with Per Una’s spring collection, which takes the key pieces and brings them bang up to date for 2022. Just add a floppy hat and armfuls of bangles.

Hyper femininity

Shrug off winter’s sombre layers with an abundance of feelgood frills and florals, as seen at fashion houses Simone Rocha, Giambattista Valli and Molly Goddard. After all, who wouldn’t want to channel a florist shop’s spring display this year? Bid farewell to threadbare grey sweatpants and reach for Autograph’s floral fancies instead. This coral midi dress gets our vote: with its elegantly draped cupro fabric, statement sleeves and buttoned cuffs, it’ll look just as chic with heels for a wedding reception as toughened-up with chunky sandals.

Pale and interesting

According to luxe fashion brands Hermès and The Row, chic all-white ensembles are precisely what your wardrobe called for. A godsend on busy mornings, a ‘blank-canvas’ outfit equals fuss-free styling before you’ve had your first coffee of the day, allowing statement jewellery and accessories to shine. But don’t stop at white: cream, ecru and beige all work as sartorial palate cleansers, too. Reach for Per Una’s belted jacket, embroidered blouse and straight-leg jeans on sunny days for an ultra-wearable take on the trend.

Not-so-mellow yellow

From butter yellow to highlighter hues, designers from Jil Sander to Max Mara revelled in the optimistic shade for spring. The easiest way to work yellow clothing into your look? Why, with a pair of wide-leg jeans, of course! A borrowed-from-the-boys parka jacket keeps the look cool, not insipid, while festival-ready accessories and backless mules add instant edge.

With Pantone’s Popcorn a key colour for spring/summer 22, you may wish to introduce the sunshine shade into your interior design, as well as your wardrobe.
