What to consider when buying a post-surgery bra

In the weeks and months after breast surgery, your skin may feel tender and swollen, making a well-fitting, supportive bra essential to your comfort and wellbeing. Our post-surgery range is thoughtfully designed to meet different needs, from fuller-coverage styles to softer, more feminine bralettes.

As your body heals, comfort is key. Opt for soft, non-wired designs, and consider front-fastening styles if movement is limited. “We recommend our recovery bra for the early weeks,” says Mhairi Leach, M&S’s technology lead (lingerie). “It offers a non-wired design with gentle compression, and a full-cup shape for supportive coverage. It also features adjustable straps with a hook-and-eye fastening to ensure a flexible, comfortable fit as your body heals.”

Gentle support and comfort

Post-surgery bras are designed for extra support, featuring wide underbands and straps to keep you secure. All our post-surgery bras include soft cotton internal pockets to hold a prosthesis in place, and the fabrics and trims are gentle against sensitive skin. The collection ranges from everyday and strapless styles to lacy designs by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

We also offer breast forms in four different sizes to help you achieve your desired silhouette, plus a supportive sports bra for when you’re ready to return to weekly workouts. Our post-surgery pockets adapt your existing bras to hold a breast form and keep them wearable after surgery, too.

Fittings can be done in-person through our Bra Fit service. “All our fitters are trained in post-surgery bra fitting and understand the varying needs depending on treatment and recovery stage,” says Mhairi.
