Your Ultimate Duvet Buying Guide

Sarah LafargeWhat is the best type of duvet to buy?
You can either choose a natural or synthetic filling for your duvet. Each one has different benefits, so the right filling is the one that best fits your needs and preferences.
Synthetic: synthetic fibres mimic the look and feel of down. Hollow fibres are thicker and easily trap warmth, whereas microfibres are extra-fine. They’re a great hypoallergenic option and are easier to wash than natural duvets but tend to have a shorter lifespan.
Down: lightweight and breathable, down is the fluffy sub-layer on the underside of ducks and geese. It’s soft and airy while providing great insulation.
Feather: natural feathers are heavier and more substantial than down, but don’t give as much volume. Goose feathers are considered more premium than duck as they’re larger and more insulating. Feathers are often mixed with down to create a luxurious blend.
What is the difference between synthetic and natural duvets?
Natural duvets
One of the advantages of a natural filling such as wool or goose down is its ability to regulate your body temperature throughout the year. Thanks to the natural fibres found in these duvets, your skin can truly breathe as you sleep. For a lighter feel without sacrificing thermal performance, choose one with a higher down content. If you prefer a cosy, weighted duvet, opt for one with a higher feather content.
Synthetic duvets
A synthetic duvet is plumper and often heavier than a natural duvet. All our synthetic duvets are made with recycled polyester. Our Soft as Down duvets are designed to give a down-like feel whilst our Ultimate Comfort range stays feeling full for the most ultimate night's sleep. Our Supremely Washable range is quick drying, so you can have it washed, dried and back on the bed in the same day.
What tog duvet should I get?
A tog (thermal overall grade) rating measures the thermal insulation of bedding. The higher the number, the better the duvet will retain heat and keep you warm. Weight and thickness don’t have a direct correlation – a thin duvet can have a higher tog rating depending on the filling.
Common tog ratings:
1-4.5: The lightest duvets, anything below a 4.5 rating is best suited for the summer.
7-10.5: The middle of the road, duvets ranging between 7.5 and 10.5 are best for transitional seasons like spring and autumn.
12-15: Great for winter and cold nights, a 13.5 duvet is one of the warmest options.
Our All Seasons duvet is a 3-in-1 combination of our 4.5 and 9 tog duvets that can be attached together for the cold winter months and separated for the summer ones.
