Calling all make-up addicts – discover how to make the hottest trends look as good in real life as they do on the catwalk with these spring beauty makeover tips

Try the mermaid eye

Forget play-it-safe neutrals – this season, blue eyeshadow is the shade to be seen in. Flattering for every skin tone, it brightens and opens eyes up. Take the plunge with this aquatic twist on a smoky eye, spied at Diane von Fürstenberg, or dip into the trend with a single sweep of blue mascara.

HOW TO: Neutralise darkness around eyes with concealer, then dust a blue shimmer eyeshadow over lids, blending above the socket crease and along the bottom lash line. Run a contrasting blue-toned eyeliner close to the top lash line for extra wow factor, topped with black mascara.

Be a glowing goddess

Want to look like you’ve been in Mustique for a fortnight? Ultra-glowy skin (as seen at Alberta Ferretti) can perk up your pallor after winter. Fresh and healthy-looking, a bright complexion has all the wow factor without straying too far from your comfort zone.

HOW TO: Massage a self-tan facial oil over your face and neck. Skip moisturiser and accent your features using cream highlighter on the tops of cheekbones, down the centre of the nose and along the Cupid’s bow and tear ducts. Use the warmth of your fingertips to blend. Brush up brows and finish with a touch of blush.

Look pretty in pink

Showcase your flirty side with spring’s prettiest power pairing – fuchsia-pink lips and delicate feline liner. Quick yet transformative, Dolce & Gabbana used the same shade on lips and cheeks at different intensities, keeping the look on the grown-up side of girly.

HOW TO: Use a sheer foundation and concealer to cover blemishes. Buff a light flush of cream blush over cheekbones, then layer the same colour over the lips. Swipe on a dusky pink shadow, focusing on the outer corner of eyes (pink on the inner corners can make them look puffy), apply eyeliner with a flick and add mascara.
