ALEXA CHUNG: STYLE ICON

Where Alexa Chung leads, others follow. Here, fashion’s favourite muse talks inspiration, fashion faux pas and her new range

Brand Alexa

How do you describe Alexa Chung? Perhaps best known for her impeccable style, Alexa has been dubbed an ‘It’ girl for the past decade – but this successful entrepreneur is much more than a party girl about town.

A journalist, author, model, presenter and brand consultant – now launching her first fashion collaboration with M&S – the Hampshire-born 32-year old, who even has a designer bag named in her honour (remember the Mulberry Alexa?), has a CV to rival most.

A British trailblazer

With more than two million followers on Instagram, Alexa is the ultimate poster girl for 21st century fashion and beauty, inspiring a generation of designers and bloggers to take her lead on what’s hot or not in the industry. Take last year’s tan suede skirt (pictured left): once Alexa wore it, headlines were made. Call it the ‘je ne sais Chung’ effect or, as American Vogue editor Anna Wintour once described Alexa, “a phenomenon”.

Where does she draw inspiration? “At the moment, I love Gram Parsons, the TV show Narcos, ballerinas and posh old men,” she says. An eclectic mix – but then Alexa is never one to follow the crowd.

Has she ever got it wrong? “Absolutely,” she exclaims. “It's rare that I happen upon a picture of myself and think I smashed it, but perhaps that’s down to my Britishness.”

Reimagining the past

Now launching her highly anticipated Archive by Alexa Chung collection with M&S, Alexa has reinterpreted her favourite pieces from the extensive M&S archive and made them relevant for today.

“I had pictures in my head of what I would find,” she says. “Mainly floral tea dresses and cable-knit jumpers that my drama teacher used to wear.

She continues, “[M&S is] a brand that I grew up with, from getting my first bra and school gingham summer dresses to borrowing my dad’s oversized shirts when I first got into fashion. For me, this emotional connection was the most exciting part.”
