M&S' chic new maternity collection

Pregnancy is an exciting time but it can render much of your wardrobe redundant. Or advice? Invest in a great pair of new maternity jeans and work your look around them

Good jeans

If denim is your go-to wardrobe staple during pregnancy, get the best maternity jeans so they’ll go the distance. Here’s how…

Special features

Maternity jeans come with two types of waistband: ‘over-the-bump’ styles that have an extended panel that goes over your bump; and ‘under-the-bump’ styles that ride low and have elasticated panels to accommodate your growing baby. Try both to see which suits you best

Sizing up

In pregnancy it’s not always just your bump that grows. As your joints soften and your blood supply increases, you may go up a size or find the cuts that worked before don’t look so good. Ordering online and trying your jeans at home means you can try them with your own clothes

Wear them with…

As your bump grows, longer-length tops ensure you stay covered, but if your blouse or jumper is too long or voluminous it can make you look top heavy. An over-the-bump belt can neaten up your silhouette and shows off your bump, or throw a pre-pregnancy jacket over a fitted vest

A cut above

As a general rule, the more tailored the maternity jeans, the better they’ll look. Looser shapes and wide-leg styles can contribute to a boxy, shapeless silhouette, especially if worn with loose tops. So choose a pair that fit you well and celebrate your bump

How many pairs?

It can take a while for your tummy to get back to normal after the birth, so you may be in your maternity jeans for longer than you think. If you’re a real jeans fan, it may be a good idea to buy a couple of pairs – a classic everyday style and a more fashionable cut

Over the top

Longer-length, classic coats such as trenches, look great over jeans and will last you long after your pregnancy. With dark denim, a coat in a bright colour adds fun while darker shades keep your style elegant. With lighter denim, a simple black pea-coat is easy to wear, or keep it casual with a parka

Follow the label

To keep your denim looking pristine and the waistbands soft and stretchy, always follow the care instructions on the label and remember that denim doesn’t have to be washed after every wear. Turning jeans inside out to wash helps maintain the colour
