Make a splash

My beach holidays consist of a quick one-hour flight to Byron Bay, or a road trip to Palm Beach, so space can be crucial, which means packing a capsule wardrobe is key. Where to start? It’s all about pieces you can mix and match. Start with these seven items and you can’t go wrong: a swimsuit, lightweight linen shirt, great pair of shorts, dress that takes you from day to night, pair of jeans, classic cotton tee and a wrap or cover-up to wear on chilly evenings, lie on the sand or use to wrap your hair in.

“Being Australian, great swimwear is a must – you can add it to your wardrobe as part of an outfit or wear it alone. This striped swimsuit is flattering on all body types and has a great cut.”

For the love of linen

Linen is the go-to summer fabric to look and feel cool. It’s so easy to wear: you can take time to iron it or wear it crinkled and oversized. M&S has such a strong linen collection that’s available all year round with beautiful fashion pieces and plenty of wearable wardrobe essentials. No one wants to spend time ironing when they could be having fun, so I am a fan of the flat pack – lie everything flat and fold it all into itself – no rolling. I find it avoids creases and kinks and is perfect for linen pieces.

“Wear a linen shirt over a swimsuit on the beach, or pare it back with a floaty skirt for lunch. Pale pink, vibrant coral or classic white look amazing with stripes.”

Beach-ready accessories

“I love scarves on holiday. Tie one around your ponytail or wrap your hair in it if you’ve got gorgeously beachy locks at the end of the day – there’s no need for a perfect blow-dry. A wide-brimmed hat is not only sun safe but stylish too, while shell jewellery is such a big trend. A great pair of sunglasses always polishes your holiday look.”

Stripe it out

“If you’re not into a shirt-and-shorts look, a great little shift dress is so easy – and if it’s got pockets like this one then even better! The shape skims over the hips and sits just above the knee, so it looks great on all body types and is ideal for holidays. Chuck over a swimsuit or dress it up with a lightweight trench or a nice cotton blazer if you’re going for dinner when the temperature drops a touch. It’s always good to have one dress that can take you from day to night.”
