Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the office As a size 24 pear, I have big hips. Really big. But I also have a small waist relatively for my size. I'm just so sick of being told by the high street that unlined 'tube' skirts that show every lump and bump are appropriate to be taken seriously for smart business attire. So, this skirt, lined, decent length, and with a waist band that doesn't make me look like a sack of spuds, is an absolute godsend. Please please please M&S, can we have more of these smart, tailored skirts and dresses WITH LINING. They're more comfortable, and what I used to love about this store. Also the longer 27" length is perfect for us taller, fuller hipped ladies.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Basic skirt I normally am a size 14. I have skirts and trousers from last year that I still wear and they are all size 14. This skirt was ok on the hips but much too small on the waist. In fact I had to send for a size 18 before the waist would fade but then of course the hips were much too large. I am finding this problem with a lot of your clothes. The material was very lightweight but at the price I suppose that was ok. I would have liked it to be a little bit longer but that is just personal preference. I felt it was not smart enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful Navy Skirt I have recently purchased two of these skirts, the first instore and the second online. On arriving home after purchasing instore I tried the skirt on again and discovered the lining was overlapping the rear vent. On measuring, the lining was as much as 1.5" wider than the skirt itself so consequently I will be returning for refund. The skirt purchased online is in good order and I now have a complete suit having bought the jacket earlier. Fabrics, not the best of quality but reasonably priced at £19.50 (complete suit £59.00) so no grouses. The beauty of purchasing both skirt and jacket is you can 'mix and match'. Skirt looks great with pretty top and jacket with jeans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crossdresser perspective - Lovely little skirt I've bought this skirt twice now to wear in the hotel on business trips. On both occasions it's been popped in the clothing bank to go to a new lucky owner! I'm usually a 14 so I bought this size the first time without trying it on. I found the 14 a little big and slightly longer than I would normally like for a pencil skirt but despite this it was comfortable and I enjoyed wearing it. I'd agree with some of the other comments here that the lining is not as nice quality as you might expect from an M&S pencil skirt, but it's not bad either. The second trip, i thought i might get away a size 12, so this time I braved trying it on in store (the Victoria store in Westminster). I tried this and a few other items on in the gents changing room and the staff were super nice to me and never blinked at a bloke trying on women's clothes. The 12 was a much nicer fit and felt way more comfortable. It was a nicer length for me and also a little tighter than the 14 which i also preferred. Despite this, the material has a nice stretch and it's very easy to walk in the skirt. So, overall, I love this skirt, but would definitely recommend trying before you buy if you can as you may find you need a smaller size.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible fit I have been buying these type of black pencil skirts from m&s for years and years as they are my bog standard work wear and usually buy a few at a time. However the last couple of skirts I have bought have been terrible with the main problem being, as many reviewers have commented on, that the waist is tiny and uncomfortable compared to the rest of the skirt. I’m usually an 8 in these skirts and m&s generally however a 10 in this skirt is eve too tight around the waist. M&S please sort your sizing out as it is a pain trying to look for other alternatives!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smart work wear The quality, colour and style of this skirt are beautiful. However, the sizing is not right. I am a size 8 in nearly all my clothing but I could hardly fasten this skirt at the waist. The rest of the skirt fits beautifully but then it seems to go so far in at the waist it is far too tight. I ordered a size 10 which I’ve kept as it’s a slightly better fit; but now it fits at the waist and the rest of the skirt is too big around my hips. Such a shame because if the fit was improved it would be perfect. I spoke to a staff member and was told I maybe need to lose some from my middle area. Lovely, thanks for that. Am keeping the skirt because I love the quality and style, but will have to have it altered on the hips to fit. Have never had this issue with other m&s clothing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tailored Fit Pencil Skirt The skirt is smart but the tailoring is skimpy, so try for size before buying.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap and nasty The first one of these skirts I tried had a nasty greasy mark on the front. Ordered again and just so disappointed with the quality and fit. Would prefer to pay double for a less skimpy fit and better quality material. I have a lovely black pencil skirt from M&S purchased a few years ago and the fabric is a lovely weighty crepe and the fit is superb the quality is so much better - why can’t you make garments like this any more?? Particularly classic workwear which you want to last..
