WHAT TO WEAR
MEN’S SUMMER CLOTHES

From shirts to shorts, the clothes that every man needs for summer, plus how to style them

Keep your cool with men’s summer shorts

Where once upon a time there was hot debate over whether adult men should wear shorts anywhere except the beach, opinion has thankfully moved on, and you’re likely to see men sporting everything from denim cut-offs to cargo shorts on a hot summer’s day. If you’re not sure where to start, a pair of tailored chino shorts, ending a few inches above the knee, in navy or stone is a good bet for a summer outfit.

Have fun with bright and bold printed men’s shirts

When it comes to men’s summer shirts, bright and punchy is the way forward. If you’re feeling the trend but are slightly daunted at the prospect of bold prints, just remember the golden styling rule: to bring the look together, pick shorts or trousers in a plain or neutral colour that matches a colour from your printed shirt. For the look to work, go for chino trousers or smarter trousers over denim or anything too fussy. And, most importantly, have fun with it!

Beat the evening chill with summer-ready men’s jackets

In a dream world, we’d simply ditch jackets altogether from May to September, but alas, the Irish weather thinks otherwise. Rather than ending every day in the park feeling distinctly chilly, invest in a couple of simple summer jackets. One great option is the classic bomber jacket, which is hugely versatile, especially in a plain colour like this. Another good choice is the denim jacket, which looks great with a white T-shirt and chino shorts or trousers.

Add laid-back layers with men’s summer shirts

Shirts certainly still have their place when the temperature rises. Take denim shirts, which look great teamed with light-coloured chino shorts or can be used as an extra layer worn unbuttoned over T-shirts. You can even wear your denim shirt with jeans if you’re feeling brave, although make sure each piece is a different shade to avoid overkill. Linen shirts are summer staples and look great in pastel colours. As for the classic Oxford button-down, it retains its wearability in summer – go for one in crisp white and wear with bright shorts for summer-holiday fashion vibes.
