HOW TO PAIR
CHEESE AND WINE
White or red? Hard or soft? Discover easy ways to match cheese and wine with our handy guide
Pairing wine and cheese is surprisingly tricky. From finding something that stands up to strong cheddar, to selecting a wine that smooths out the bitter tendency of blue cheese and the bloomy crust of brie, it’s not as simple as ‘White or red?’ So, here’s a great starting point – take our award-winning British cheeseboard and try the following. Pick a lingering white like a pouilly fumé that stands up to Kidderton Ash goat’s cheese (1); go for a soft, round red like juicy rioja to get the best from classic Farmhouse red Leicester (2); try the creamy Burland brie with a crisp, refreshing white such as chablis or gruner veltliner to cut through the fat (3); and match the mature Gould’s Farm cheddar with a rich chianti with notes of black fruit and a dry finish (4).
