Shorts are summer staples but they can be difficult to pull off well – handy, then, that we’ve put together this little guide
Park picnics. Seaside strolls. Festivals. Getting a bit too sunburned sitting in a pub garden all day. This look nails all of those classic summer activities quicker than you can say “factor 50”. Denim shorts are durable so will stand up to an afternoon sitting on the grass and won’t show a splash of drink or two, while the turn-up is a nifty detail that stops them looking heavy and slouchy. The reflective white cotton in the T-shirt and shirt will keep you cool all day, as will the Freshfeet tech in our canvas sneakers. Just add smart sunglasses, a cold drink and good friends.
“Leave the SHIRT unbuttoned and turn up the sleeves for an effortlessly stylish look”
Picture it: a gently bustling seaside town bathed in soft, warm light. It’s early evening as happy holiday-makers chatter at al fresco bars and restaurants, nibbling on seafood and sipping cold drinks. Music dances in the balmy summer breeze, mingling with the swish of the tide. Sail boats bob up and down. Life is good. This is the outfit you wear for that. Crisp slim shorts that finish at just the right spot are the starting point – turn them up once or twice so they finish a decent distance above the knee if needed. A polo is perfect – our refined silk and cotton knitted styles have the right sense of smart for the evening, as do the matching brown suede shoes and belt. Yacht optional.
“Great for dinner on HOLIDAY or a leisurely al fresco lunch in town”
The office is a much trickier area to pull off shorts. Swapping trousers for any old shorts kills your sense of gravitas, but if the mercury really is at bursting point there is a way. Tailored shorts are imperative – unless your office dress code is very relaxed, suddenly rocking up in baggy cargo shorts just isn’t going to cut it – and combine them with a similarly tailored but crucially unlined jacket to keep a sense of a suit without overheating. A knitted tie brightens and lightens while smart but not stuffy shoes can be worn once you’ve clocked out too. Now that’s some blue-sky thinking we can all get on board with.
