THE AROMATIC
RED WINE

This rich barbaresco wine from Italy, with the enticing aroma of berries and warm, smoky notes, signals the return of autumn, says food & wine editor Becky Sunshine

As the season changes, it’s tempting to switch to more complex, medium-bodied wines, and this smooth, sumptuous Italian barbaresco with aromas of violets, strawberries, leather and tobacco is a great choice. Made with nebbiolo grapes from Langhe in the Piedmont region of Italy, this 2011 vintage was created by M&S winemaker Jeneve Williams and local expert Claudio Manera using fruit specially selected from the long-established wine-producing areas of Treiso and Neive. For a perfect pairing, try it with hard Italian cheeses such as pecorino, grana padano and parmesan, indulgent pasta dishes or red meats such as venison, lamb and steak.
