SPICE UP YOUR DRINKS CABINET

It's time to start your love affair with sherry, a spirit overflowing with sugar, spice and all things nice

Every few years, some clever bod in the drinks business predicts the meteoric rise of sherry, but, unlike gin and port, Spain’s most precious export is yet to make much of a splash – which is madness when you consider how delicious it is. My granny slipped me my first taste when I was barely six and I loved the rich, nutty stickiness of it even then. Cracking a bottle of this Dry Sack Solera Especial, aged for 15 years to develop its sweet depth of flavour, is a bit like opening a Christmas present: vanilla, figs, candied fruit, oak and a hint of Spanish sunshine. Buy it as a gift, pour it over cake or booze up your fruit salad – if any spirit deserves a toast, it’s sherry.
