Bold suiting, spring-ready prints and cheerful checks are the wear-all-year pieces to buy now

Pattern clash

Mixing and matching colourful, clashing patterns is a spirit-lifting move that’s perfect for dark winter days. Power up your office look by teaming a checked jacket with spring-ready florals and classic stripes. Try contrasting a structured double-breasted checked blazer with a floaty retro floral-print dress. Or get more mileage out of a ditsy floral dress by wearing it with a long-sleeved striped T-shirt base layer, checked jacket, thermal tights and faux fur-lined boots now and, come spring, ditch the top and tights and swap out the boots for sandals.

Sweet spot

Polka dots are back in a big way for summer 2020, but you don’t have to wait until then to wear them. A polka-dot midi dress is a wear-everywhere piece that will quickly earn its place in your wardrobe. Pop a cold-cancelling floral funnel-neck top underneath to add interest at the neck. This pleated polka-dot skirt (coming soon) is a smart, season-straddling way to try the trend. For a winning weekend look, layer a long-sleeved polka-dot top under a cosy knit and team with checked trousers and chunky trainers.

Colour me happy

Blast away winter blahs by adding some joy-inducing colour to your wardrobe. We love this rose-coloured coat, which would look great with a cashmere knit and jeans. Trouser suits aren’t going anywhere for 2020, and pink is the colour to covet. Wear it to the office with a blouse and brogues or make it weekend casual with a white T-shirt and trainers. Prefer a less matchy-matchy approach? Mix a blazer and wide strides in different but complementary checks. For a top stylist’s tip, cinch the blazer at the waist with a contrasting belt.
