Fashion writer, designer and Instagrammer Fran Bacon of The Fashion Lift shows us how to style this season’s key pieces

Take a walk on the wide side

The new season is all about wide-leg trousers. I love that trousers are getting wider – it’s very Nineties. I sized up for an even baggier, more laid-back vibe. To make voluminous trousers work, you’ve got to balance them out with a neater top and maybe a bit of a heel. A cashmere jumper makes even a working-from-home day feel luxurious and the baby-blue shade is flattering for all skin tones and hair colours. The leopard-print shoes add a bit of interest and depth.

Do the polka

When I shop, I’m looking for key items to make my outfits look more modern, or add a twist to things I’ve already got. I’m a huge fan of blouses, and this polka-dot one would work year-round. Lightweight and easy to wear, you could throw a blazer over it or wear it under a biker jacket. You can tie up the bow or leave it open – a great option if you’ve got a bigger chest. I live in leather trousers and these are so comfortable – the relaxed fit and ankle length make them really versatile. Nude shoes make your legs look longer and the curved shape along the foot is so flattering.

Grab your jacket

Everyone needs a khaki shacket; they’re so useful. Layer under bigger coats in winter, over lightweight tops in spring and autumn, and wear with shorts and a T-shirt in summer. My style is understated. I always say I have FOBO – Fear of Being Overdressed – but a great pair of jeans works in every situation. These (which are coming soon) are amazing – relaxed boyfriend fit, great vintage wash and an ankle length that you can wear with trainers by day and heels by night. The two-tone shoes are beautiful. I like the round toe and the square heel means you can actually walk in them. I go heavy on straw bags early in the season to get maximum use from them. This one’s neutral so it goes with everything.

On the button

I like that you can change up a button-through dress by undoing the buttons to create different-length splits, and I love that this one has pockets. The colour would work with a khaki shacket, classic mac or any shade of blue denim jacket. The boxy raw-hem denim jacket works well with the fluid dress. You could wear it with ankle boots now or tan sandals in summer. I styled it with leopard-print slingbacks for a pattern clash. When it comes to mixing patterns, just go for it. Think of leopard print as a neutral and you won’t go far wrong.
