Mum on the run

“Getting the kids to school on time can feel like a workout in itself, which is why leggings are such a good option. This grey pair will go with everything.”

“The athleisure trend is absolutely perfect for January. At a time when everyone is thinking about New Year’s resolutions and shaking off the winter blues, athleisure – essentially sportswear that can be worn outside the gym – is the ultimate excuse to throw on some super-comfortable, stretchy clothes that can take you from the school run to an actual run, and everywhere in between.

“A few years ago, people would never have dreamed of leaving a fitness class without changing back into their normal clothes but now the rules have changed. Today, it’s socially acceptable to arrive at the office in a dress and trainers, or turn up to the school gates in sports leggings and a cashmere jumper.

“Looking after two small children, plus running my own business, means I need clothes that allow me to move in all directions.

One day I could be at a meeting for my blog, the next on a photoshoot. I like – and need – my wardrobe to be practical and durable, which is why I’m embracing this style of dressing wholeheartedly.

“The latest activewear collection from M&S completely ticks this box. It has all the technical features you would expect from a premium fitness range but it’s also cool and comfortable enough to live in. This season, I’ll be investing in some statement leggings that I can mix and match with simple T-shirts or jumpers. A practical hooded top is a must at this time of year, too – whether you throw it on over a pair of jeans at the weekend or use it as the perfect post-yoga layer. A sports bag is also crucial (it can even double up as a handy carry-all for the kids’ gear).

“The best thing about this trend? If I do feel like exercising, I will be dressed and ready to go, and if I don’t, then that’s fine too.”

WINNING STYLE

“This hooded top is perfect for post-workout style – it also comes in black and works well as a light jacket once the weather gets warmer.”
“I like leggings that come up higher over my ‘mum-tum’ and tops that cover my bum – they’re so comfortable.”
“Puffer jackets are big news this winter. This sleek quilted style ticks off lots of must-have looks in one chic piece.”
“I love the graphic stripe on these leggings. Pair them with a sleek black hoodie and monochrome trainers for a modern sports-luxe finish.”
“With its thumb holes, breathable fabric and zip pockets, one of our padded running jackets is perfect for outdoor exercise.”
“This bag is great for carrying my gym kit but it also fits my laptop and a nappy bag. A true all-rounder.”
