Once dubbed mother's ruin, traditional gin has soared in popularity over the past few years to become the
ultimate drink of the moment. From experimental cocktails to a classic G and T, you can't get better than a
glass of premium distilled gin, which is why we've expanded our range with an exciting collection of bespoke
and branded bottles. Cheers!
"The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen's lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the empire." - Winston Churchill
Gin has had many famous fans in the past, from T.S. Eliot to Britain's most celebrated prime minister, and it's easy to see why. A clean, cut-glass blend of fragrant botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica, orange peel, lemon peel, cardomom, and cinnamon, gin was originally used medicinally and apparently first originated in Holland. It has even been accredited with the creation of the term 'Dutch Courage', because English soldiers providing support in Antwerp against the Spanish in 1585 used to down nips of gin to keep calm before battle.
To celebrate this exceptional spirit, M&S has worked with London distilleries to produce our own line of bespoke gins as well as adding to the range of rare branded gin both in store and online. Explore, discover and get sipping, because these bottles are worth raising a glass to.
Our spirit developers have been working closely with master gin maker Charles Maxwell from Thames Distillery in Clapham, London to produce two premium gins, Zest and Spice, exclusively for M&S.
This citrus-spiked blend mixes juniper with coriander, cassia, liquorice, angelica and orange peel. What makes it extra special is the use of fresh peel from Seville for a deep, fragrant hint of juicy fruit. Try it long with lots of tonic water and garnish glasses with curls of fresh orange peel and a scattering of cloves.
Our spice version blends nine botanicals including woody rosemary, delicate jasmine, ginger, fennel and lemon balm. Made for cool autumnal evenings, the edges of peppery ginger and herbs give it a delicious warmth. Freeze slices of fresh ginger in ice cubes and serve neat with a frond of rosemary in heavy glass tumblers.
Both Zest and Spice bottles have hand-dipped wax caps and would make great gifts for discerning drinkers.
