November Club Reserva white case tasting notes

Bergerie de Courel White 2013

Wakefield Riesling 2014

A vibrant dry riesling with fresh lemon and kaffir lime aromas over blossom and floral nuances. On the palate it is zesty and mouthwatering, with bright citrus blossom notes over a deliciously clean and soft finish

About this wine:

One of the Australia’s oldest wine producing areas, the Clare Valley is known as the country’s finest region for Riesling wines. In this cool, dry valley, riesling grapes ripen slowly with excellent balance. Experienced winemaker Adam Eggins sourced fruit grown on mature trellised vines that enjoy good exposure to the sun. The grapes were pressed as whole bunches to ensure their freshness was delicately extracted, and the wine was vinified at cool temperatures to maximise the grape’s aromatic intensity.

Serving suggestion:

Ready to drink now, this riesling is best enjoyed chilled as an aperitif or to complement seafood (particularly oysters) or fragrant Thai dishes. In the right conditions, the wine will keep for up to 10 years.

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc 2013

A bright, zingy and eminently sippable dry sauvignon with intense aromas of fresh lime, lemon sorbet and cut-grass followed on the palate by mouthwatering lemon zest and spiced apple notes

About this wine:

Zevenwacht translates as ‘seven expectations’. One of those, according to winemaker Jacques Viljoen, is to ensure the natural flora and fauna of the Stellenbosch hills is preserved for future generations, so 15% of this estate is listed as a protected conservation area. Jacques has high expectations of his sauvignon too: he blends it with a small proportion of chenin blanc to flesh out the wine and add extra complexity, balancing the zesty fruitiness of the richer appley depths. The grapes are kept particularly fresh by the coastal breezes, which sweep in from False Bay.

Serving suggestion:

Combining old world charm with new world vigour, this white is great with soufflés, salads and chicken sandwiches, or chill and sip with fresh prawns, goats cheese tartlets or pour and savour on its own as an aperitif.

Luc Poullain Touraine Sauvignon 2013

Terre di Giumara Zibibbo 2013

This wonderfully fresh and zesty zibibbo (Sicily’s name for the muscat of Alexandria grape) balances intensely aromatic citrus notes with a deep passion fruit complexity to offer a well balanced dry wine from a rarely seen grape variety

About this wine:

The Terre di Giumara estate is located in an area of pretty rolling hills to the east of the famous Sicilian town of Marsala. Cooled by coastal breezes and benefitting from their location on steep slopes at between 200-400 metres, the grapes here ripen with an excellent balance of sugars and acids, despite the fierce heat the island endures in the summer months. Winemaker Giuseppe Clementi emphasises this youthful white’s freshness and vivacity by keeping the wine unoaked.

Serving suggestion:

With its distinctive Sicilian character, this white cries out for Mediterranean fish and vegetable dishes, but it’s also rich enough to enjoy on its own. Serve well chilled.

Finca Sophia Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Anjou Blanc Elysis 2013

A pretty pale gold in the glass with telltale greenish tints of youth, this delicious dry white offers a wonderful bouquet of exotic fruits – mango, papaya and pomello – over a gloriously fresh and crisp palate

About this wine:

Established in 1951, Les Caves de la Loire cooperative is based in Brissac-Quincé just south of the Loire Valley town of Angers. Today, its 160 or so growers are mostly in Anjou, with harvesting and vinification of the grapes overseen by the formidable Frédéric Moreau. He works closely with each grower and offers technical advice throughout the year. Focused on quality and terroir, Frédéric insists upon ’lutte raisonnée’ in the vineyards. This agricultural system, often referred to as a ‘more than organic’, eschews chemical use in favour of natural techniques and respect for the land.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this mouthwatering chenin nicely chilled within the next two years, either as an aperitif or to complement shellfish, white fish in creamy sauces or poached/baked chicken.

Cranswick Chardonnay 2013

La Prendina Estate Pinot Grigio 2013

A wonderfully elegant, dry pinot grigio displaying subtle yet concentrated aromas of succulent fresh limes, pears and wild herbs. The palate is zesty and whistle-clean, finishing on an intriguing minerally note

About this wine:

This delicate but complex white was produced with grapes from a single estate near Lake Garda in the beautiful Lombardy region of northeast Italy. M&S winemaker Jeneve Williams and local expert Luciano Piona worked together to express the full character of the pinot grigio grapes and the local terroir, exploiting the mild and temperate climate to achieve ripe grapes with excellent balance between sweetness, acidity and mineral depths. To emphasise the grape’s concentration, the winemakers left the wine unoaked, resulting in a crisp dry white with a lovely lingering finish.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this refined white lightly chilled, either as a mouthwatering aperitif or to complement white fish dishes, seafood in cream sauces or herby pasta dishes.

Castillo de Berisa Marques de Reinosa Rueda 2013

Godello Monterrei 2012

A delightful Galician dry white with citrus, fresh ginger and honeysuckle aromas. The elegantly floral palate shows green apple and mineral notes, combining to create a harmonious, easy-going and eminently food-friendly wine

About this wine:

Spain’s little-known godello grape is fast making a name for itself among the international stable of crisp and characterful dry whites. And it is those from the cool, Atlantic-influenced vineyards of Galicia that are making the most impression. This mouthwateringly example was produced by the outstanding team at Pazos del Rey in Val de Monterrei towards the east of the region. The winemakers have created this apple-fresh, honeysuckle-scented white solely from godello grapes, using a thoroughly modern approach to create an unoaked white that bursts with freshness.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this lovely wine lightly chilled with all kinds of fresh shellfish and seafood, as well as with dishes like chicken and mango salad.
