Club Reserva white wine tasting notes

Bergerie de Courel White 2013

Bergerie de Courel White 2013, Caves de Chinian, Languedoc

A lively, breezy, white: an elegant southern blend full of buttery citrus notes and gentle fruitiness. The leafy lemon tones of the Vermentino grape give this wine a real freshness, and an invigoratingly long finish.

About this wine:

Deep in the south of France, huddled at the foot of Mount Caroux, just 40 km from the coast, these picturesque vineyards have been home to France’s wild and wonderful Mediterranean grapes for generations. Here, grenache, roussane and vermentino emerge in all their richly spicy, scented glory. Winemaker Simon Whittle skilfully blends the trio, ageing the wine in new French oak barrels for thee months to give extra smoothness.

Serving suggestion:

Served lightly chilled, this gentle white makes a great match for shellfish, white meats and fresh green salads. Or sip it on its own as a flavoursome aperitif.

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Stellenbosch, South Africa

Fine flavours of warm lemons and spiced apples greet the palate while an invigorating burst of fresh lime and lemon meet the nose. An added zing of newly-cut grass and pure green apples make this white ultra-appetising and eminently sippable.

About this wine:

Zevenwacht translates as ‘seven expectations’. One of those, according to winemaker Jacques Viljoen, is to ensure the natural flora and fauna of the Stellenbosch hills is around for future generations, so 15% of this farm is listed as a protected conservation area. Jacques has high expectations of this sauvignon too: he blends it with 15% chenin blanc for extra complexity and a dash of chutzpah, and its zesty fruitiness is kept all the zingier by the fresh coastal breezes which sweep in from False Bay.

Serving suggestion:

Combining Old World charm with New World vigour, this white is great with soufflés, salads and chicken sandwiches, or chill and sip with a fresh prawn salad, goat’s cheese tartlets. Otherwise, pour and savour on its own as an aperitif.

Luc Poullain Touraine Sauvignon 2013

Luc Poullain Touraine Sauvignon 2013, Touraine, Loire, France

Warm peach and apple-blossom aromas lead to a firmly structured palate of flinty, lemony fruit that broadens out to mellow tangerine and gentle melon flavours, but never loses its tantalising mineral tang.

About this wine:

Luc is a rare person in today’s French wine world: he is a first generation vigneron and winemaker. He purchased his vines and deep underground chalk cave in 2000 and set about making wines with a healthy respect for sustainable farming, a keen eye on terroir, and a great deal of passion. With this sauvignon as proof, he has had a 13 good years. The chalky soils of Cher Valley have served him well.

Serving suggestion:

This classic minerally white is great to serve with oysters and seafood, shellfish and crab salads. Or with the traditional French partner of goat’s cheese – on a crostini canapé or in filo parcels. Alternatively, serve with a simple chicken salad.

Finca Sophia Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Finca Sophia Sauvignon Blanc 2011

A crisp, fruit-forward style of sauvignon blanc with intense fruit flavours balanced with vibrant acidity.

Cranswick Chardonnay 2013

Cranswick Chardonnay 2013

Classic chardonnay with lively citrus aromas and underlying notes of vanilla. Crisp lime and apple flavours with hints of melons and stone fruit are balanced by buttery oak characters and a long, elegant finish on the palate.

About this wine:

Always warm and sunny, the long Barossa Valley summer days are perfect for ripening chardonnay grapes. They make bold, ripe, fruit driven wines, full of mouthwateribg character. Winemaker Moreno Chiappin is Italian born, but has been making wine in Australia for over 15 years.

Serving suggestion:

Serve this buttery Aussie white lightly chilled, with chicken, turkey and pork dishes simply roasted or served with rich gravy or a creamy sauce. Or serve with robust fish such as grilled sea bass, salmon and red snapper.

Castillo de Berisa Marques de Reinosa Rueda 2013

Castillo de Berisa Marques de Reinosa Rueda 2013, Spain

A powerfully fragrant, grapefruit-scented white, with soft, mouthwatering apple and peach on the palate. Rounded, rich and utterly captivating, this lively white keeps you guessing with an intriguing tang of orange peel, plus a hint of lychee and pepper on the finish.

About this wine:

Verdejo is considered Spain’s answer to sauvignon blanc. Named after the green colour of its skin, this grape is thought to have originated in north Africa and travelled to Spain with the Moors (who came from Morocco in Medieval times). So verdejo has been grown in Rueda for over 1,000 years and the team at Castillo de Berisa, headed by winemaker Sandra Martin Chivite, all adore its zesty refreshing character. It’s feisty refreshing fruit character needs no oak embellishment.

Serving suggestion:

Try it with lightly spicy dishes: sizzling chilli prawns or marsala chicken drumsticks. Try herb-baked salmon – or fresh grilled white fish in a buttery sauce. Rice and pasta dishes will work well with this lively white, as will salt-and-pepper squid and Spanish tapas.
