Bodega Piedra Negra Cabernet Sauvignon

Bodega Piedra Negra Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Alta Colección’, Argentina 2014

A juicy Cabernet with an intense ruby colour and heady aromas of fresh berries and mint. The smooth, balanced palate blends fruity depths with menthol and liquorice nuances.

About this wine:

This red comes from the southern Mendoza region of Argentina, a pristine area in the foothills of the Andes mountains where climate and geology dovetail to provide a haven for vines to grow. The grapes for this wine were sourced from vineyards located on a high plateau, where the sun’s UV rays are stronger, ripening the grapes thoroughly, while the cold nights help develop great acidity structure. Winemakers Francois Lurton and Thibault Lepotre combined their considerable expertise to craft a Cabernet with balance and charm, adding a touch of oak to soften and luxuriate the texture.

Serving suggestion:

Fruit forward and uncomplicated, this easy-going red is seriously versatile – as good on its own as it is with grilled lamb or pork chops, vegetable bakes or some good charcuterie.

Regaleali Rosso Nero d’Avola, Sicily 2013

Regaleali Rosso Nero d’Avola, Sicily 2013

This velvety red is a powerhouse of sunny Sicilian intensity, all sumptuous cherry, mulberry and blueberry layers backed by savoury notes of sage and a hint of vanilla.

About this wine:

Tenuta Regaleali is a family-owned Sicilian wine estate nestled in the beautiful Sclafani Bagni hills between Palermo and Caltanissetta. Here, the famous heat of the island is less intense, and at 900m, the vineyards enjoy cooler air, letting the grapes ripen more slowly. Sicily’s beloved Nero d’Avola is the star attraction, and the Tasca d’Almerita family’s Regaleali Rosso wine has been produced here for 57 years. Winemaker Laura Orsi blended in a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon for extra character, then matured half of the wine in Slavonian oak to soften and develop it ready for drinking.

Serving suggestion:

A classic example of Old World wine-making, this complex red is great with food, from roasted and grilled red meats to rich, slow-cooked pasta sauces with aubergine.

Beaujolais Villages

Beaujolais Villages

A delightfully fruity old-vine Gamay with a bouquet of wild strawberries and redcurrants. In the mouth it is flamboyantly fruity, with a bright, thirst-quenching freshness.

About this wine:

The Beaujolais area in the far south of France’s Burgundy region is home to distinct Cru appellations, as well as the Beaujolais and the more premium Beaujolais Villages wines. This example is from one of the higher-quality villages, Charentay, just south of Mount Brouilly. Winemaker Robin Sébastien selected prime Gamay grapes from 45-year-old vines, which have dug their roots deep down into the area’s sandy granite soils over the years. The hand-harvested grapes were fermented using a combination of methods, resulting in a wine with that distinctive Beaujolais balance between supple fruit intensity and fresh, food-friendly tanginess.

Serving suggestion:

Serve at cool room temperature, with seared duck breast, tuna steak, cheese and herb omelettes or a fresh tomato and Parmesan tart. Drink now or keep for up to three years.

Domaine Colombe d’Or, France 2013

Domaine Colombe d’Or, France 2013

A fleshy southern French red with warm blackberry and summer cherry aromas over black pepper and cinnamon notes. The palate is smooth and supple, with firm tannins.

About this wine:

The Costières de Nîmes appellation lies in the western Rhône delta in France’s Gard department. Wine styles here represent a transition between the classic blends of the southern Rhône and the more varied styles of the sunny Languedoc. The area around Nîmes has been cultivated with vines for over two thousand years, making it one of the oldest vineyards in Europe. Many believe it is the gravelly soils here that give the wines their character. This wine is a classic blend of Syrah and Grenache, two varieties that are inextricably linked to the vinous history of this part of France.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this easy-going French red with all manner of foods, from slow cooked beef and lamb casseroles to meaty pasta dishes, soft cheeses and roast vegetables.

'El Guardián Rioja Reserva, Spain 2010

'El Guardián Rioja Reserva, Spain 2010

This lovely Reserva is a classic Rioja through-and-through, from its brick-red colour, to its ripe autumn fruits bouquet, with hints of mocha and sweet vanilla, and its smooth, rounded palate.

About this wine:

The central region of Rioja, known as Rioja Alta, is characterised by its rust-coloured ferruginous clay soils. Combined with the continental climate and the south-facing slopes, this is the perfect environment for local varieties Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha to grow. The wine is named after the Bee-Eater bird which can often be seen in the vineyards, eating insects that would otherwise be pests to the vines. Bee-Eaters are greatly appreciated by the local vineyards workers – who call the bird ‘El Guardián’, as they limit the need for pesticides and so produce more natural wines.

Serving suggestion:

A classic Rioja Reserva like this is great with meaty dishes, particularly roast leg of lamb or rare breed pork, well-hung game meats and full-flavoured aged cheeses.

Frankland River Shiraz, Australia 2013

Frankland River Shiraz, Australia 2013

A wonderfully opulent Shiraz from Australia’s Frankland River area, rich with blueberry, plum and spice notes over a luxuriously long and complex palate with excellent depth.

About this wine:

The Frankland River region is one of Western Australia’s best-kept secrets, building its reputation on producing exceptional quality cool-climate wines. The area is one of the five sub-regions of the Great Southern in Western Australia; the most northerly, inland area, where the climate is Mediterranean but with a strong coastal influence that keeps temperatures down. This complex Shiraz was made by winemaker Kim Horton, who sourced high-quality grapes to maximise the purity of ripe fruit characters in the wine, and gave it an approachable softness by ageing it in French oak barrels.

Serving suggestion:

Try this flavoursome Shiraz with roasted red meats or a plate of fine continental cheeses. Serve at room temperature and drink now or lay it to rest in the cellar.
