Zilzie Selection 23 Shiraz, Murray Darling, 2014

Zilzie Selection 23 Shiraz, Murray Darling, 2014

A fragrant Aussie Shiraz with sweet dark fruit aromas over hints of warm vanilla. The palate is lusciously smooth, with morello cherry, cassis and toasted oak notes lingering on the finish.

About this wine:

Zilzie is a family-owned winery in the Murray Darling region of Victoria, southeastern Australia. This fertile area along the Murray river supplies most of Victoria’s wineries with grapes. Indeed, for many years Zilzie grew grapes for others, but in 1999 the Forbes family decided to move into making their own wines. Winemaker Hayden Donohue crafted this rich Shiraz by co-fermenting the fruit with a small proportion of Viognier, a white grape that adds a wonderful perfume to the wine. After fermentation, Hayden matured the wine in both French and American oak barrels for extra complexity.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine while young – preferably within two years of purchase – by itself or with roast chicken, good quality pasta dishes and pizza, or with cheese.

Fontousal Mencía, Bierzo, Castilla y León, 2014

Fontousal Mencía, Bierzo, Castilla y León, 2014

This fruity Spanish red offers bright aromas of autumn fruits, balsamic vinegar and sun-baked earth, over a smooth palate rich with ripe fruit notes and a fresh, floral finish.

About this wine:

The Mencía grape is the principal variety of the Bierzo region in northwest Spain, an area of rolling hills and river valleys in Castilla y León. The alluvial slate soils here are particularly well suited to growing the grape. Winemaker Pablo Franco hand-picked the fruit from vines in the village of Cacabelos that are farmed in a traditional, environmentally sustainable way. The grapes were cool fermented for around five days before fermentation, and Pablo kept the wine free of oak to emphasise its fruity character.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this easy-going fruity red as a refreshing party wine, or to wash down charcuterie, simple tapas dishes, cured cheese, paella or a rustic chicken and chorizo stew.

Zevenwacht 7even Syrah, 2014

Zevenwacht 7even Syrah, 2014

A complex Syrah with cassis, cracked pepper and jasmine flower aromas over a voluptuous palate offering sweet black fruits, violet notes and an oaky opulence on the finish.

About this wine:

The Zevenwacht estate lies in South Africa’s famous Stellenbosch hills. The estate’s name translates as ‘seven expectations’, one of which is to ensure the natural flora and fauna of the hills is nurtured for future generations. Today, the family-owned winery upholds this tradition, sourcing the grapes for this wine from protected vineyards overlooking False Bay that are carefully managed in keeping with the local wildlife and wild flowers. Winemaker Jacques Viljoen added a touch of Grenache to flesh out this Syrah, then matured the wine in French oak barrels to soften and harmonise its character.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this red within the next three years, with robust meats such as rosemary and garlic-studded lamb, venison casserole, duck breasts and any chargrilled meats.

Forever Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel, California, 2013

Forever Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel, California, 2013

A punchy red with black cherry and wild bramble aromas over hints of toasty oak. The rounded palate offers plenty of jammy fruit, with black pepper and sweet woody notes on the finish.

About this wine:

Based in Manteca in California’s Central Valley, Forever Vineyards focus on expressing the famed Californian terroir though their wines. For this red, head winemaker Tim Wong used grapes from the winery’s oldest Zinfandel vines, which produce much less fruit than younger plants. But while the grapes are smaller and scarcer, they are highly concentrated. The fruit was hand-picked and lightly pressed as soon as it reached the winery, then after fermantation Tim aged the wine in a mixture of French and American oak barrels to soften and develop its complex depths.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this fruity red on its own or with rich foods like barbecued ribs, spicy Italian sausages, rich and spicy meat stews or mature cheeses. The wine will keep for five years or more.

'The Islander’ Kangaroo Island Sangiovese, Australia 2012

'The Islander’ Kangaroo Island Sangiovese, Australia 2012

This deliciously fresh Sangiovese offers bags of sour cherry, coffee beans and plum aromas, over a medium-bodied palate with a silky texture and lingering cigar box notes.

About this wine:

Grown on the rolling hills of Kangaroo Island off the coast of southern Australia, this Sangiovese was discovered by M&S Winemaker Belinda Kleinig, herself an Aussie with a love of this beautiful island. Renowned Bordeaux winemaker Jacques Lurton long held a dream of establishing his own vineyard in Australia. Jacques was struck by the Island’s pristine beauty and wonderfully cool, maritime-influence climate, which makes it a veritable viticultural paradise. Renowned for his soft touch in the cellar, Jacques makes wines of great elegance and subtlety, and this Sangiovese is a fine example.

Serving suggestion:

This easy-drinking red is perfect with your favourite pasta dishes, or even gourmet pizzas. Serve at room temperature and enjoy it young while its fruit flavours are to the fore.

Côtes du Roussillon Villages Saveurs Oubliées, 2013

Côtes du Roussillon Villages Saveurs Oubliées, 2013

A fruity southern French red with autumn berry, sweet cassis and spice aromas, over a full-bodied palate showing gorgeous intensity of flavours that linger long on the finish.

About this wine:

This gorgeous red is from the Agly Valley in France’s Roussillon region, a beautiful area inland of the Mediterranean coast overlooked by the Pyrenees mountains. This is vine-growing nirvana, where vines stretch far and wide into the foothills and valleys, thriving on the many different terroirs and enjoying the 300 days of sunshine per year. Saveurs Oubliées is a classic example of the area’s famed Côtes du Roussillon reds: a voluptuous blend of old-vine Carignan, Syrah and Grenache grapes which winemaker Camille Malet has left unoaked to reveal all the character and richness of the fruit.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine now or cellar for up to three years. It works well on its own, but is even better with the some good quality charcuterie, cassoulet or slow-cooked lamb or beef dishes.
