November Club Reserva red case tasting notes

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere

Norico Rosso delle Dolomiti IGT 2011

This intensely vibrant red packs a wonderful bouquet of wild blackberry and cherry aromas over a spiced and tangy palate that offers soft tannins and a dry, food-friendly finish

About this wine:

An unusual blend of cabernet sauvignon, teroldego, merlot and lagrein varieties, this wine hails from the Trentino region in northeast Italy’s Dolomite mountains. Grapes ripen well here, soaking up the bright Alpine sunshine and warm valley air to achieve an excellent balance of sugars and acids. Experienced local winemaker Anselmo Martini harvested and vinified each grape variety separately, maturing the wines separately in oak barriques before finely blending them together into the finished cuvée.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this juicy red within two years, as an excellent partner to Italian classics like lasagne, pasta ragù or herb-marinated grilled meats, even good pizza.

Casas del Bosque Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva

Prieur Saint Esprit GSM, IGP Pays d’Oc 2013

A lively medium-bodied languedoc red offering perfumed blackberry and mineral earth aromas over a seductive palate of ripe plum, dark cherry and ground black pepper notes

About this wine:

Although originally from the southern Rhône valley, the French red wine blend of grenache, syrah and mourvedre is today such a classic combination that the term GSM is widely used for these wines from the sun-drenched vineyards of France’s Languedoc-Rousillon region. This particular example was made by flying winemaker Hugh Ryman and producer Cellier Jean d’Aibert, who used mostly grenache and syrah grapes from differing vineyard terroirs, adding in a touch of mourvedre for its earthy depth. Thirty percent of the wine was aged in French and American oak to soften its fruity complexity.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine at room temperature within three years, either on its own or to complement full-flavoured dishes like grilled marinated lamb, cassoulet or lentils and bacon hot pot.

Montevina Zinfandel

Aliwen Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah 2013

This powerful Chilean red offers an intense bouquet of ripe red and black fruits over floral and spice notes. On the palate it is rich and voluptuous, balancing bold fruit, good acidity and sweet tannins with a long finish

About this wine:

The Rapel Valley in central Chile is a haven for vine growing. Its two main sub valleys, Colchagua and Cachapoal, are both crossed by rivers that bring vital, mineral-rich water down from the Andes and leave the vines plenty of well-draining stony soils to thrive in. This award-winning blend was made by Carlos Concha at the Undurraga winery. He selected the varietal grapes from vineyards in each valley, vinifying and then ageing the wines separately in French and American oak barrels before finally blending 60% cabernet sauvignon with 40% syrah to achieve a wonderful harmony and balance.

Serving suggestion:

Opulent and versatile, this wine makes a great match for rich beef or game dishes, wild boar ragù or mature cheese, or enjoy it on its own. Serve at cool room temperature now or over the next three years.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Santa Gloria Reserve Syrah 2013

Bright purplish-red in the glass, this vibrant syrah boasts intense aromas of red berries, fresh violets, ripe figs and baking spice, over a nicely balanced palate with sumptuous fruit and toasted spice notes

About this wine:

Santa Gloria have been producing wines in the heart of Chile’s Maipo Valley since 1954, when local politician Máximo Valdés founded the estate on a small plot of land not far from the capital city. Today, the much expanded winery possesses a talented team of winemakers, including Mauricio Garrido, who crafted this excellent syrah. Mauricio used traditional winemaking techniques to get the best from the fruit, finishing 50% of the wine in French and American oak to harmonious and integrate its fruity spiciness.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine at room temperature within the next three years, either on its own or with a selection of barbecued red meats or fine mature cheeses.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Friuli Merlot 2012

A deliciously fruity merlot boasting ripe cherry, sun-baked herb and toasty oak aromas over a fresh and structured palate with an easy-going and balanced finish

About this wine:

Northeast Italy’s Fruili Venezi Giulia region is ideally suited to the cultivation of vines. Protected from the icy north winds by low mountain slopes and warmed by breezes rising from the Adriatic, the stony terrain here provides a perfect environment for producing ripe, balanced grapes. This merlot was crafted by M&S winemaker Jeneve Williams and local vigneron Arrigo Bidoli. They worked hard to retain the fruit’s aromatic freshness, rounding the wine’s tangy cherry notes off by partially ageing it in French and American oak barrels, which softened and harmonised the overall character.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this opulent and supple red by itself or with meaty wild boar or venison casseroles, or with classic Italian spaghetti bolognese or lasagne.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Rioja Romeral Crianza 2010

A mellow, medium-bodied rioja with fragrant plum, cassis and wild strawberry aromas over vanilla and baking spice note. On the palate it is wonderfully smooth and rounded with soft tannins and a hint of spice

About this wine:

Grown in the beautifully scenic hills surrounding Rioja in northern Spain, this seductive wine was made purely from hand-picked tempranillo grapes by experienced winemaker Elena Adell. After the fruit was crushed and fermented, the wine was matured for 12 months in American oak barrels to soften and integrate its flavour and develop that unmistakable rioja character that only the tempranillo grape can give. The term crianza is used to describe rioja wines that have been matured for at least one year in oak and have spent a further two years ageing in bottle.

Serving suggestion:

This moreish, eminently food-friendly red is a highly versatile wine that would match anything from grilled lamb cutlets to a rich bean casserole. It’s also delicious on its own.
