Club Reserva red wine tasting notes

Montevina Zinfandel

Aliwen Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Vibrant aromas of black fruits and dark chocolate dominate this sumptuous red, while on the palate ripe blackberry, hazelnut and tobacco flavours meld seamlessly together.

About this wine:

This mouthwatering Cabernet Sauvignon blends grapes from Chile’s premium Maipo and Colchagua Valley regions. The Maipo fruit comes from mature vines growing in deep and stony soils where the summer sun is cooled by foggy mornings and cold evening breezes. In Colchagua, the more constant sunshine is tempered by the vines growing in poor river bank soils. Balancing 70% of the Maipo fruit with 30% from Colchagua gives this wine a great harmony between warm ripeness and a brighter, more refreshing edge.

Serving suggestion:

Ready to drink now, this rich and complex red goes well with rare roast beef, hearty game casseroles, mature cheeses or even fresh pasta in meat ragù.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Santa Julia Selección Tempranillo 2012

A fabulously pure red packing deep berry, liquorice and almond aromas over a rounded palate of ripe bramble fruits, warm spice notes and fresh grippy tannins.

About this wine:

This bold Argentinian red shows just how good Tempranillo wines can be from Mendoza. Argentina’s winemaking success owes much to its influx of Spanish and Italian immigrants in the 19th century, who brought their beloved native wine grapes with them. This helped put Argentina ahead of the New World wine curve, something which winemaker Ruben Ruffo is keen to exploit. Having worked in Rioja, Catalonia and Ribera del Duero, Ruben enjoys putting an Argentinean twist onto Spain’s classic grape varieties.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine over the next two to four years with barbecued meats, lamb tagines, rice dishes and strong cheeses. The wine will benefit from being left to breathe before drinking.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Journey’s End 'Kendall Lodge’ 2011

Ripe dark fruits and sun-baked herb aromas dominate this opulent South African blend, with a fine-textured palate offering elegant and slightly savoury flavours.

About this wine:

Generous and spicy in flavour but graceful in feel, this fine-tuned blend comes from grapes grown in the prime regions of South Eastern Australia and gently honed in the winery by experienced winemaker Sam Wigan.

Serving suggestion:

Serve at room temperature and allow to breathe a little first. Enjoy it with full-flavoured dishes such as venison with juniper berries or cottage pie.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Domaine Mirabau ‘Les Domaines Auriol’ 2012

A bright and autumnal southern French red bursting with bramble fruit and smokey spice aromas over an elegant palate of raspberry and cassis flavours with lively acidity.

About this wine:

This modern Roussillon red comes from southwest of Perpignan in the fertile hills between the Canigau mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Here, vines have thrived for centuries and grapes easily ripen, giving the local winemakers considerable options. To give this wine its balance, the winemakers vinified the grapes in two ways, using Beaujolais-style carbonic maceration to draw as much fruity exuberance as possible from the Syrah, while vinifying the Grenache traditionally to give the wine its depth and structure.

Serving suggestion:

This highly versatile red would be perfect with roast red meats, robust chicken casseroles, spicy tomato ragùs and mature cheeses. It can keep for up to five years.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba DOCG 2012

This lively red shows aromas of red berries and cherries over hints of sun-baked earth, with cherry and bitter almonds flavours followed by a bright and tangy finish.

About this wine:

While it’s often overshadowed by Piedmont’s more famous grapes Nebbiolo and Barbera, Dolcetto offers the canny wine drinker bags of tangy Italian fruit character. Produced in the tiny Diano d’Alba village, nestled between the heavyweight Barolo and Barbaresco areas, this generous red was crafted by winemaker Daniele Ponzo. Sourcing grapes from mature vineyards in the Langhe hills, Daniele carefully vinified the wine at low temperatures to extract all the grapes’ character, leaving it unoaked to enhance the freshness.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this characterful red on its own or with spicy chicken casseroles, grilled or barbecued steaks, cured meats and semi-mature cheeses.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Finca Constancia, VdlT Castilla, Spain 2011

A dark and brooding red with aromas of ripe blackberries, wild violets and baking spices over a sumptuous palate of stewed fruit and leather notes, softened by vanillary oak.

About this wine:

Blending six international and native grape varieties, this complex red is a real testament to modern European winemaking. The grapes were sourced from an area with a distinctive array of soil types, and winemaker Beatriz Paniagua Ortiz, who has worked in vineyards and wineries throughout Spain, knew just how to represent these diverse terroirs. To fully integrate this characterful blend, Beatriz aged the wine for 13 months in both French and American oak barrels to soften and meld its complex flavours.

Serving suggestion:

This wine is ready to drink now and will match beautifully with rich red meats such as roast lamb or venison, as well as full-flavoured cured meats and mature cheeses.
