Club Reserva red wine tasting notes

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2010

Bursting with the dusky aromas of ripe black berry fruits, this complex, full-bodied wine is a fine example of modern Chilean winemaking.

About this wine:

Produced at the award-winning Montes winery in the premium area of Colchagua Valley, this exclusive blend combines top quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with Carmenère, a distinctive variety originating from South West France that is grown at its very best in Chile. The palate is full of juicy, vibrant cherry fruits and displays lovely spicy notes from ageing in high-quality French oak. Powerful tannins provide a great structure for further development in the bottle.

Serving suggestion:

A brilliant partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb or beef, this wine is also a perfect accompaniment with any barbecued meats.

Casas del Bosque Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva

Casas del Bosque Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2012, Rapel Valley, Chile

Generous aromas of blackcurrant and sweet cassis lead to intense blackcurrant and vanilla flavours that fill the palate. Spicy, savoury notes of rhubarb and star anise mix in towards the finish, adding gentle complexity.

About this wine:

New Zealander Grant Phelps cut his teeth in cool-climate winemaking by working in Oregon, Hungary, Australia, California, New Zealand and Argentina, before finally arriving in Chile. His wide experience taught him to bring out the very finest nuances of any grape. None is more deserving than this complex Cabernet Sauvignon from vines averaging an age of 65 years (the oldest vineyards planted in 1900, the youngest in 1980). Grant has been making wine in Chile for 13 years.

Serving suggestion:

Great for partnering with roasted red meats – from fillet steak to rare roast beef, rosemary-roast lamb or a rich lamb shank casserole. Or try it with turkey and cranberry sauce – matching the fruity sweetness of the cranberry with the richness of the wine.

Montevina Zinfandel

Montevina Zinfandel

Fruity red wine with juicy coffee and cherry aromas, then zingy raspberry and redcurrant fruit on the palate. Subtle, sweet oak notes give way to gentle caramel and clove tones on the finish. A ripe, rounded red wine, combining bold fruitiness with spicy complexity.

About this wine:

The rocky granite soils of the Sierra Foothills are perfect for big, deep red wines – Zinfandel in particular. Montevina’s Zinfandels are from vineyards planted in the mid 1800s and as winemaker Chris Leamy explains, "This gives them a deep sense of place." The region’s gold prospectors are known to have brought the vines and planted them here, so they could quench their thirst with wine after a day hunting for gold.

Serving suggestion:

Great for matching grilled meats, platters of cheese, and fabulous with roast turkey and cranberry stuffing. Try matching it with meat dishes that have a touch of sweetness, like chicken and sweet potato, or salt-marsh lamb with redcurrant sauce.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Finca Manzanos Graciano 2012, Rioja, Spain

Gorgeous savoury, complex aromas of mingling red fruits and minerals followed by smooth elegant fruit – mellow, spicy blueberries, plums and prunes. This medium-bodied red lingers and lasts on the palate, and keeps the tastebuds guessing all the way.

About this wine:

Graciano grapes usually only have a small part to play in the Rioja blend, so this rare wine makes a lovely alternative. Taking centre stage, Graciano shines forth with lively bright fruit and myriad of rich berry aromas. Cellar master Borja Ripa sees Graciano as a mega-star in the making, and as Finca Manzanos own 15% of all Rioja’s Graciano vineyards, he has a great selection of grapes to choose from. He ages half the blend in French oak for four months.

Serving suggestion:

Mellow casseroles, savoury stroganoffs, fresh-baked lasagne and fine mature cheeses all make great partners for this red. Or go completely Spanish and serve with hearty tapas dishes such as tortilla and meatballs.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Rouge et Noir 2009, Clos d’Yvigne, Bergerac, France

Rich, ripe, opulent red with aromas of strawberry and raspberry, caramel and vanilla. Mellow raisin and chocolate warm the palate, with toffee, spice and a streak of tarry intensity – a tang of liquorice – surrounding the rich red fruits. This complex, expressive red fills the senses and strengthens the soul.

About this wine:

Patricia Atkinson moved to France in 1990 knowing nothing about winemaking. Her determination to learn and to make wines that are rich in concentration, with clean, clear flavours, has bought her success, much praise from the critics, and a growing reputation. This 75% Merlot combines classic softness with fine, firm Cabernet flavours (Cabernet makes up 25% of the blend). It is aged for 18 months in Burgundian oak.

Serving suggestion:

Serve this sumptuous red with the best quality steak, hearty roast venison, and rich red meat dishes and casseroles. Or with a platter of fine mature cheeses.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore 2011, Cantina Terre del Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

Sweet toffee and strawberry aromas with a gentle rusticity lead into a palate of fine Italian complexity: expect red fruits, strawberries, truffle, cinnamon, violet and chocolate. Layers of elegant flavour are bound together by a delicate yet firm thread of apple acidity.

About this wine:

These Barbera grapes have been selected from a group of 400 farms in the Langhe area of Piedmont. Only fruit from the best exposures on the best slopes and the finest vineyards makes the blend, and winemaker Daniel Ponzo ensures this grape’s lovely smooth fruit character is always to the fore. With the average age of the vines at 25-30 years old, deep concentration is almost guaranteed. The final blend is aged in French and American oak barrels for one year.

Serving suggestion:

Serve with mushroom-based stroganoffs and casseroles, or steak with mushrooms or pepper. A perfect partner for new-season lamb (this red has the intensity and force to work with the rich fatness of the meat) or a North Italian osso buco with shallots and orange.
