Bergerie de Courel White 2013

Bradgate Chenin Blanc 2013

An easy-drinking fruity white with rich tropical flavours and a hint of pear from the Chenin Blanc grape, while green fig and red pepper freshness comes through from the Sauvignon in the blend. The Sauvignon also gives this wine its crisp, elegant finish.

About this wine:

Gary and Kathy Jordan have built Bradgate up from a small family-run 6,000 case winery to a major 50,000 case company. They proudly wave the banner of South African Chenin Blanc too. Not for nothing is this the best-loved white grape in the Cape, and it reveals such wonderful depth of fruit here. The Jordan team ensure that the vivid New World flavours really shine, but are always tempered by classic complexity and structure. This Chenin is unoaked and is blended with a little Sauvignon for added elegance.

Serving suggestion:

A perfect partner for mushroom risotto, fillet of sole with lemon caper sauce, or richly flavoured pasta dishes such as creamy chicken tortellini or spinach and ricotta cannelloni.

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Lantana Semillon-Chardonnay 2013

Fabulously fresh aromas of ripe yellow fruits, melon and peach are followed by exuberant peach and vanilla on the palate. A mouth-watering tang of tropical pineapple and a hint of hazelnut makes this wine a completely delicious mouthful.

About this wine:

A skilful blend of 60% Semillon and 40% Chardonnay from Australia’s sunny heartland – the Murray- Darling region. Here, red loam and limestone soils, hours of Aussie sunshine, and the cooling waters of the Murray River ensure full ripeness and wines that are brimming with flavours. This wine is made by Anthony Murphy, whose family have been growing grapes here since 1909. Anthony believes the vibrant flavours of these grapes need no oak embellishment.

Serving suggestion:

The lovely smooth pineapple fruit of this white will partner roast pork or chicken to a treat – match the fruitiness with a rich casserole such as braised pork with apricots, ginger and thyme. Try it with richer fish dishes too such as salmon poached in white wine or a Provençal Bouillabaisse fish stew.

Luc Poullain Touraine Sauvignon 2013

Tokomaru Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Fresh, vibrant aromas of grapefruit, kiwi and green nettles make a zingy welcome to this glass. The palate has concentrated tropical and grapefruit notes, which combine with lively acidity to give a crisp, mouth-watering finish.

About this wine:

2013 saw a rush of vibrant flavours in Marlborough, as all the vineyards and sub-regions seemed to ripen simultaneously, so grapes of every nuance and aroma simply flooded into the wineries. From Easter Monday onwards it was all hands on deck, and the winemakers were spoiled for choice! Sauvignon grapes for this wine were selected from the Awatere, Ure and Wairu valley sub-regions of Marlborough.

Serving suggestion:

A classic match for seafood, especially with a touch of Asian spice – such as Thai fishcakes or spiced shrimp with coriander and chilli. Or try it with chicken pad Thai, or Chinese honey-glazed duck with sticky rice.

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2010

Cave de Gortona Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Richly expressive Sauvignon Blanc with strikingly exotic notes of lychee, orange and pomegranate. This grape’s classic citrus and mineral twist is there on the palate, but enveloped by biscuit and brioche warmth, and notes of fresh oranges.

About this wine:

Steeped in French and Roman history, this prime Loire Valley vineyard site was planted with vines way back in 1860 by grandfather of the current cellar master Eric Louis. Eric likes to compare his role as winemaker with that of being a father, and he nurtures his vines with equal tenderness: ‘One observes the vines, looks after them, cajoles them…’, he says. This Sauvignon comes from 20-year old vines that contribute to its lovely rich intensity.

Serving suggestion:

Great for matching with risotto or elegant tagliatelle pasta dishes – with Parma ham, asparagus or mushroom cream sauce. Or pair it with filo-wrapped salmon, or puff pastry chicken pies.

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere

Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine, Gadais Père et Fils 2013

Classic stone-and-mineral Muscadet with a slight spritz and wonderful freshness. Tropical aromas of pineapple and vanilla lead to exuberant flavours of orange-peel, star anise, cloves and soft and juicy pineapple.

About this wine:

The very best Muscadets are always aged ‘sur lie’ – the lie/lees being the yeast deposits that fall to the bottom of the tank during fermentation. Keeping the wine on these gives it extra richness and definition and elevates it to the distinguished ‘Sur Lie’ appellation. This Muscadet has been aged on its lees right up to its bottling date in March 2014, that contributes to its delicious tropical notes.

Serving suggestion:

Serve it with seafood, but also try it out with goat’s cheese, pesto and fresh pasta, smoked haddock, or smokey grilled sardines.

Casas del Bosque Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva

Ventoux Les Traverses Blanc 2013

Elegant, lightly complex white with lemon, pear and sweet melon characters filling the nose and palate. A tingling, mineral finish keeps things dry and tangy while the ripe fruit generates gorgeous – but gently retrained – sweetness.

About this wine:

From the warm, windy hillsides of the Southern Rhône, where these two classic varieties – Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc – survive the buffeting Mistral winds and scorching hot summers with ease. Grenache Blanc provides 80% of the blend and is renowned for its luscious fruitiness, while Bourboulenc contributes this wine’s refreshing citrus notes.

Serving suggestion:

Serve chilled as an aperitif or serve with simple seafood dishes of fresh oysters and mussels, party snacks, or perhaps a plate of grilled asparagus with butter.

Montevina Zinfandel

Lantana Shiraz-Cabernet 2012

Fabulously rich but fleeting aromas of chocolate, molasses, coffee and deep red fruit make an enticing welcome to a warm, rich palate brimming with sweet fig, cinnamon and toffee. This vibrant red has a core of red apple and chunky cranberry fruit, but its real appeal is its multi-layered complexity that keeps you guessing all the way to the finish.

About this wine:

Winemaker Anthony Murphy matches 60% Shiraz with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon in this chunky red. The grapes are grown on rich red loam and limestone soils and nourished by the waters of the Murray River – the oldest of the vines were planted as long ago as 1952, and generate a wonderful old-vine intensity of flavour. Ageing takes place in French and American oak barrels for 12 months.

Serving suggestion:

Great for partnering casseroles of beef and venison or garlic roast lamb with all the Sunday trimmings. Alternatively, serve with a platter of fine hard cheeses such as Montgomery Cheddar, Beaufort Gruyère or mature Spanish Manchego.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Aliwen Pinot Noir 2013

Ripe fruit flavours fill the palate with gentle aromas of spice and a hint of violet following through on the nose. These classic Pinot Noir characters are complemented by sweet, nutty tannins and a delightfully long, elegant finish.

About this wine:

Made by young winemaker Carlos Concha who has been at Undurraga seven years now. He recently took charge of Aliwen with a view to seeking out new terroirs and a new vibrance for the wine. Carlos likes his wines to taste “a bit more off piste and young”. As a passionate snowboarder and lover of nature and wilderness, he aims to match his wines to the wilder side of his own personality. The grapes for this Pinot Noir are from coastal Leyda (60%) and from Chile’s famous Maipo Valley (40%).

Serving suggestion:

Truly versatile Pinot Noir that is as tasty an accompaniment to Sunday roast lamb as it is to everyday chicken and mushroom pie. Or serve with hearty lasagne, game casseroles or top quality butcher’s sausages.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Finca Agostino Inicio Malbec 2013

Deep violet coloured wine with fruity blackberry and plum aromas combined with delicious secondary aromas of vanilla and toast. Gorgeous soft, silky tannins surround equally sumptuous dark plum flavours and lead to a long, lingering finish.

About this wine:

In Argentina’s dry, semi-desert Barrancas region, on the stony soils of an old river bed, lie the Malbec vineyards of Finca Agostino. This family wine estate was built up by four siblings: Vincenzo, Rosalia, Sebastian and Miguel Agostino, who knew and loved the vineyards and wanted to leave a lasting heritage there. Their ambitions are realised in today’s Malbecs, which are regular awardwinners. This wine gains its wonderful smoothness from careful barrel-ageing in French and American oak.

Serving suggestion:

Great with barbecues – its softness really complements the smokey charred flavours of steak, chicken or lamb cooked outdoors. Equally good to serve with a plate of chocolate and dried fruits, or with mature hard cheeses.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Le Prince Clos d’Yvigne 2009

Powerful aromas of leather, plum, cherry and pepper really conjure the mood of a Bergerac barrel cellar. Gorgeous supple fruit in the mouth, with wonderful depth, elegant pepperiness and velvety richness that lasts into a long, lingering finish makes this fragrant red both mouth filling and irresistibly complex.

About this wine:

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, this fine red was crafted by English winemaker Patricia Atkinson who moved to France in 1990. At that time she knew nothing about winemaking, but with a lot of hard work in her Bergerac vineyard, she quickly learnt the art of making high quality, clean, rich wines. Today they are the darlings of the wine critics.

Serving suggestion:

Serve with rich, flavoursome casseroles of lamb, beef or game. The complexity of this red will easily partner slow-cooked lamb raan, a top quality beef bourguignon or an elegant platter of mature cheeses.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Votum Pinot Nero-Syrah 2011

Syrah shows itself first – all sweetness and blackberries – then Pinot Noir’s raspberry and cherry tanginess brings a welcome lift. Rich berry aromas, fresh raspberry characters, and a fabulous flourish of chocolate, coffee and sweet spice at the finish, make this a mouthfillingly gorgeous red.

About this wine:

Marcello Padovan has selected Pinot Nero (or Pinot Noir) and Syrah from two separate regions of Sicily. The Pinot, harvested from the slopes of Mount Etna, makes up 60% of the blend, while the Syrah (at 40%) comes from coastal vineyards. They seem an odd couple, but Marcello knows that too much Syrah can easily overpower the ‘more nervous’ Pinot, and here he takes care to balance the pair to perfection. Votum is Latin for ‘solemn vow made to the Gods’. Marcello’s vow is that this wine is worth trying.

Serving suggestion:

All the complexity is here for matching chunky patés, game casseroles, mature cheeses and rich stroganoff dishes. Best of all, serve with a classic Italian dish of slow-cooked osso buco.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Fortant de France Syrah Terroir de Collines 2012

Deep red-purple wine with deliciously complex aromas of violet, black pepper and liquorice. Lively blackberry and spice fruit comes through on the palate, full of warmth and richness. This is classic Syrah, full-bodied, generous, and long-lasting on the finish.

About this wine:

This 100% Syrah comes from the unique Terroir de Collines area of the French Languedoc. Hot days, cool nights and the superdrying Mistral and Tramontane winds that regularly sweep the region create real depth of flavour in these dark grapes. Winemaker Laurent Sauvage harnesses their flavours to perfection by selecting from old (up to 40 year old) vines, and ageing this wine on its lees in small French oak barrels.

Serving suggestion:

The seriously sweet fruit and gentle softness of this red means it can even handle spicy food. Try it with Tandoori chicken or a Moroccan lamb tagine. Fennel-crusted belly pork or a classic dish of lamb and rosemary will make a more conventional match.
