Bergerie de Courel White 2013

Terre di Giumara Grillo 2013

This gorgeous golden Sicilian white offers intriguing notes of lime, ripe pear and ground almond over a tingling fresh backbone of green apple and tropical fruit flavours.

About this wine:

Grillo is an historic Italian grape variety that thrives along Sicily’s south-western coast near Marsala where it is an important component of the area’s famous sweet wine. But Grillo also makes excellent dry whites when the grapes are carefully grown and vinified, such as this example from Terre di Giumara. Winemaker Giuseppe Clementi is an expert in bringing the best out of this and the island’s other indigenous grapes, creating a wine with a wonderful balance of freshness and complexity.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this characterful white lightly chilled, either as a refreshing summer aperitif or to wash down oily fish like sardines and mackerel, or pasta with seafood and herbs.

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Luis Felipe Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2013

This voluptuous Chardonnay offers vanillary peach and apricot aromas over a mouthwatering palate of ripe tropical fruit flavours and a buttery, oak-tinged finish.

About this wine:

Viña Luis Felipe Edwards is a very progressive family-owned winery established in Chile’s Colchagua Valley in 1976. They’ve thrived on investing heavily in vineyards throughout the country’s best regions. This modern Chardonnay is from their Casablanca Valley sites, a sunny area tempered by cool breezes from both the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains. This gave winemaker Nicolás Bizzari his pick of high quality fruit with intense primary fruit characters, which he’s softened by maturing the wine for six months in French oak.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this rounded white within the next three years, lightly chilled as an aperitif or to accompany robust fish dishes, crab salads and risottos.

Luc Poullain Touraine Sauvignon 2013

Charles Smith ‘The Honourable’ Riesling 2013

A dry and vibrant style of Riesling from cool-climate Washington State offering gloriously fresh lemon and lime flavours over a finely balanced and very moreish palate.

About this wine:

M&S Winemaker Belinda Kleinig sourced this punchy Riesling from North America’s most exciting new-wave winemaker, Charles Smith. Renowned for his expertise in getting the best from Washington State’s cool climate, Charles creates iconic wines with bright aromatics and bags of well-defined fruit character. The vineyards for this Riesling lie along steep, sustainably farmed cliffs above the Columbia River where the vines are tempered by cool air, pushing the acid balance of the grapes and increasing the wines’ freshness.

Serving suggestion:

Serve this mouthwatering white wine lightly chilled and drink while young and fruity. Try it with all manner of spicy dishes from Asian noodles to salt and pepper squid.

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2010

Santa Julia Viognier 2013

This modern Argentinian Viognier is all about the glorious tropical fruit and honeysuckle aromas and the rounded, peachy palate that finishes on a nice citrussy tang.

About this wine:

Santa Julia is one of the wineries under the Familia Zuccardi stable, an Argentinian estate who’ve made their name turning more unusual European grape varieties into successful New World wines. This seductive Viognier is no exception, a classic Rhône white wine grape given a distinctive spin by quality, if unorthodox, Mendocenean winemaking. Natalia Cáceres has endeavoured to reveal the full character of this unique grape: hand-harvesting the fruit and keeping the wine unoaked to show off all its fruity splendour.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this expressive white within a year to capture its freshness, either as an aperitif or, true to its French heritage, with lobster, scallops and spicy crab dishes.

La Finca Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere

Prieur Saint Esprit Chardonnay, 2013

This sunny white is bursting with warm lime and mango aromas over a smooth palate of ripe peach and candied citrus peel flavours with a rich and buttery finish.

About this wine:

Based in the heart of Minervois, producer Jean d’Alibert has collaborated with famous Bordeaux vigneron Hugh Ryman on this wine. To create a white with a difference, the winemakers have sourced grapes from two different areas – beautifully ripe Chardonnay grapes from warm Mediterranean vineyards and a small amount of Viognier from cooler vineyards in the hills near Carcassonne. They then fermented the Chardonnay in French oak barrels before blending, to soften the ripe fruit and add a warm toasty richness.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine over the next two to three years, lightly chilled as an aperitif or served alongside roast chicken, dressed crab or barbecued pork.

Casas del Bosque Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva

Domaine du Haut Perron, Touraine 2013

A wonderfully crisp and refreshing Loire Valley Sauvignon with aromas of fresh-cut grass and blackcurrant leaf over a tingling palate of green apple and fresh lime flavours.

About this wine:

Cédric Allion is a hugely passionate Touraine winemaker who has worked with his celebrated father - Guy, since 1999 to grow their family’s respected estate and continue its reputation. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this wine come from vineyards on the flinty banks of the river Cher, where Cédric and his father nurture their vines with utmost care and sustainable practices. This ensures that their grapes reach the winery with all their potential intact, requiring just delicate vinification to create exceptional wines.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this eminently food-friendly white while it’s young and fresh, lightly chilled with summer asparagus, warm goats’ cheese or seared seafood salads.

Montevina Zinfandel

Aliwen Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Vibrant aromas of black fruits and dark chocolate dominate this sumptuous red, while on the palate ripe blackberry, hazelnut and tobacco flavours meld seamlessly together.

About this wine:

This mouthwatering Cabernet Sauvignon blends grapes from Chile’s premium Maipo and Colchagua Valley regions. The Maipo fruit comes from mature vines growing in deep and stony soils where the summer sun is cooled by foggy mornings and cold evening breezes. In Colchagua, the more constant sunshine is tempered by the vines growing in poor river bank soils. Balancing 70% of the Maipo fruit with 30% from Colchagua gives this wine a great harmony between warm ripeness and a brighter, more refreshing edge.

Serving suggestion:

Ready to drink now, this rich and complex red goes well with rare roast beef, hearty game casseroles, mature cheeses or even fresh pasta in meat ragù.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Santa Julia Selección Tempranillo 2012

A fabulously pure red packing deep berry, liquorice and almond aromas over a rounded palate of ripe bramble fruits, warm spice notes and fresh grippy tannins.

About this wine:

This bold Argentinian red shows just how good Tempranillo wines can be from Mendoza. Argentina’s winemaking success owes much to its influx of Spanish and Italian immigrants in the 19th century, who brought their beloved native wine grapes with them. This helped put Argentina ahead of the New World wine curve, something which winemaker Ruben Ruffo is keen to exploit. Having worked in Rioja, Catalonia and Ribera del Duero, Ruben enjoys putting an Argentinean twist onto Spain’s classic grape varieties.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine over the next two to four years with barbecued meats, lamb tagines, rice dishes and strong cheeses. The wine will benefit from being left to breathe before drinking.

Finca Manzanos Graciano

Journey’s End ‘Kendall Lodge’ 2011

Ripe dark fruits and sun-baked herb aromas dominate this opulent South African blend, with a fine-textured palate offering elegant and slightly savoury flavours.

About this wine:

With its blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this full-flavoured yet elegant South African red brings to mind the classic right-bank clarets of Bordeaux. Winemaker Leon Esterhuizen carefully assembled the wine from top quality grapes grown in the hillside vineyards a few kilometres from the sea in the prime wine region of Stellenbosch. The wine is named after the original homestead which stood guard over the vineyards, looking out over False Bay only a few miles from the ocean.

Serving suggestion:

Ready to drink now, this herby red will benefit from being left to breathe for an hour before serving and would match beautifully with a fine fillet steak or seared duck breast.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Domaine Mirabau ‘Les Domaines Auriol’ 2012

A bright and autumnal southern French red bursting with bramble fruit and smokey spice aromas over an elegant palate of raspberry and cassis flavours with lively acidity.

About this wine:

This modern Roussillon red comes from southwest of Perpignan in the fertile hills between the Canigau mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Here, vines have thrived for centuries and grapes easily ripen, giving the local winemakers considerable options. To give this wine its balance, the winemakers vinified the grapes in two ways, using Beaujolais-style carbonic maceration to draw as much fruity exuberance as possible from the Syrah, while vinifying the Grenache traditionally to give the wine its depth and structure.

Serving suggestion:

This highly versatile red would be perfect with roast red meats, robust chicken casseroles, spicy tomato ragùs and mature cheeses. It can keep for up to five years.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba DOCG 2012

This lively red shows aromas of red berries and cherries over hints of sun-baked earth, with cherry and bitter almonds flavours followed by a bright and tangy finish.

About this wine:

About this wine: While it’s often overshadowed by Piedmont’s more famous grapes Nebbiolo and Barbera, Dolcetto offers the canny wine drinker bags of tangy Italian fruit character. Produced in the tiny Diano d’Alba village, nestled between the heavyweight Barolo and Barbaresco areas, this generous red was crafted by winemaker Daniele Ponzo. Sourcing grapes from mature vineyards in the Langhe hills, Daniele carefully vinified the wine at low temperatures to extract all the grapes’ character, leaving it unoaked to enhance the freshness.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this characterful red on its own or with spicy chicken casseroles, grilled or barbecued steaks, cured meats and semi-mature cheeses.

Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore

Finca Constancia, VdlT Castilla, Spain 2011

A dark and brooding red with aromas of ripe blackberries, wild violets and baking spices over a sumptuous palate of stewed fruit and leather notes softened by vanillary oak.

About this wine:

Blending six international and native grape varieties, this complex red is a real testament to modern European winemaking. The grapes were sourced from an area with a distinctive array of soil types, and winemaker Beatriz Paniagua Ortiz, who has worked in vineyards and wineries throughout Spain, knew just how to represent these diverse terroirs. To fully integrate this characterful blend, Beatriz aged the wine for 13 months in both French and American oak barrels to soften and meld its complex flavours.

Serving suggestion:

This wine is ready to drink now and will match beautifully with rich red meats such as roast lamb or venison, as well as full-flavoured cured meats and mature cheeses.
