Elsa Malbec, Argentina 2014

Elsa Malbec, Argentina 2014

A gorgeous smoky Malbec with a vivid violet colour and intense aromas of plum and cherry. In the mouth it is silky smooth, with an abundance of dark fruit flavours over subtle tannins and a round and harmonious finish.

About this wine:

This Malbec is from the San Rafael area of Mendoza, one of the cooler parts of Argentina’s world-famous region. Grapes ripen slower in San Rafael, developing brighter fruit flavours and aromatics, especially in the vineyards of Rama Caida, one of the coolest areas in San Rafael, where the vines grow at 760 metres. Winemaker Facundo Pereira sourced only hand-picked grapes, using gentle winemaking techniques to extract as much freshness and fragrance as possible from the grapes.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine on its own or with food, particularly well-aged steaks seared on the barbecue, grilled teriyaki salmon or roast pork. The wine is drinking perfectly now and will keep for up to two more years.

Joël Robuchon’ Syrah, France 2013

Joël Robuchon’ Syrah, France 2013

A fresh and balanced medium-bodied syrah with lovely blackcurrant, liquorice and garrigue herb aromas. In the mouth it is full and rounded; very fruit driven with elegant syrah flavours of blackcurrant and black pepper and a soft tannins.

About this wine:

This extraordinary syrah is a collaboration between Caroline Frey, winemaker for Paul Jaboulet Aîné, and world-famous chef Joël Robuchon. The pair travelled through the south of France, exploring the terroirs between Avignon and Montpellier. This syrah is a link between the two banks of the Rhône, made with grapes from both the clay and limestone sides of the river. It expresses the spicy, garrigue herb aromas of the Rhône as well as the rounded red-fruit intensity of the Languedoc. The grapes have been picked at night to capture all their aromatic qualities, and no oak maturation was used.

Serving suggestion:

Whether sipped by itself or paired with food, this wine is a delight. Try it with a plate of good quality charcuterie, or for syrah’s perfect match, drink it with juicy seared steaks seasoned with plenty of black pepper. Will keep for up to two years.

‘Le Jour et La Nuit’ Old Vine Carignan, France 2014

‘Le Jour et La Nuit’ Old Vine Carignan, France 2014

A deep ruby-red carignan from mature old vines, offering deep blackberry aromas and notes of sun-baked spices. In the mouth it is rich and full-bodied, with sumptuous autumn fruit notes nicely balanced with good tannins.

About this wine:

France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region spans 700,000 acres of vineyards around the Mediterranean coastline from the border with Spain right around to Provence. Despite a myriad grapes grown across this region, it is often said that the Carignan variety is the genuine grape of southern France. Winemaker Thomas Verdeil selected Carignan grapes from vines of between 30 and 50 years in age. These gnarled old vines may produce fewer grapes than younger vines, but their fruit tends be smaller with more concentrated flavours, helping to create intensely fruity and complex wines such as this.

Serving suggestion:

Let this wine breathe for a few hours before drinking. It makes a great partner for rich meats stews, herb-marinated steaks and chops, pasta sauces with sausage or bacon and even fresh soft cheese. Will keep for up to two years.

Ca’ di Alte Pinot Nero, Italy 2013

Ca’ di Alte Pinot Nero, Italy 2013

A light and fresh tasting pinot nero with a pretty ruby-red colour and ripe aromas of summer cherries, liquorice and perfumed flowers. In the mouth it is juicy and balanced, with mouthwatering fruit depths and a lingering finish.

About this wine:

Ca‘ di Alte winery was created by Italian Alberto Marchisio. Although from Piemonte, Alberto has been working in the northeast Veneto region for some years. He has been responsible for dramatically improving the quality of the wines at Cantina Colli Vicentini. The Pinot Nero grapes for this wine were grown on the hills south of Vicenza, the Colli Berici, where the hillside sites experience cooler nights and allow the aromatic compounds of the grapes to develop. Alberto captured the delicate aromas of the grapes in the winery, ageing 30% of the wine in oak to add depth and complexity.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this versatile red by itself as an aperitif (it is excellent served slightly chilled) or to complement classic Italian dishes like pasta with spiced sausage, grilled meats with polenta and slow-cooked lentils.

'Grandes Vinos El Director, Spain 2012

'Grandes Vinos El Director, Spain 2012

A concentrated red from northeast Spain with sumptuous aromas of poached cherries and blackcurrants over hints of leather and orange peel. In the mouth it is lush and smooth, with ripe bramble fruit flavours balanced by a savoury, earthy edge.

About this wine:

The Grandes Vinos cooperative has vineyards across the Cariñena region, covering different microclimates and altitudes ranging from 320 to 850 metres. The continental climate in this region, with its cold winters and hot summers, is mitigated by the cool and dry Cierzo wind, which blows through the vineyards and dries the grapes as they ripen. Chilean winemaker Marcelo Morales Calderon came for the vintage 13 years ago and stayed, excited by both the quality of the fruit and the high standard of the facilities he had – and still has – at his disposal.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this concentrated yet balanced red with rustic foods such as juicy homemade hamburgers seared on the barbecue, spicy grilled chorizo sausage and Mediterranean vegetables with pasta.

Helderberg Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, South Africa 2

Helderberg Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, South Africa 2013

A well-structured, medium-bodied red from South Africa, offering a powerful nose of cassis, dark plums, coffee and wild herbs. In the mouth it is dense and fruity, balanced by good acidity, fine tannins and cedar wood notes.

About this wine:

Helderberg Cellars lies on the edge of the Stellenbosch region, its vineyards planted on the foothills of the Helderberg mountain overlooking False Bay. This stunning region benefits from cool breezes that extend the ripening period and intensify the red fruit flavours in the grapes. The 2013 harvest here resulted in very high quality fruit, which celebrated winemaker Marc Kent selected at optimal ripeness. After cool-fermenting the grapes, the wine was matured in a mix of old and new French oak barrels. For added quality, only gently filtration was used so there may be a harmless sediment at the bottom of the bottle.

Serving suggestion:

This seductive Cabernet Sauvignon is deliciously approachable now but will keep for a further three to five years. Try it paired with a rich herby beef casserole, succulent barbecued steaks or mature cheeses.

Finca La Colonia Sauvignon Blanc, Argentina 2014

Finca La Colonia Sauvignon Blanc, Argentina 2014

A deliciously refreshing Sauvignon with an intense bouquet of citrus, garden herbs and gooseberry. Zesty and light, the wine offers plenty of bright fruit characteristics, with an elegant dry finish.

About this wine:

Finca La Colonia was founded in 1932 in Mendoza. This beautiful estate sits in the foothills of the Andes, home to over 45 families who work in the vineyards of Bodega Norton, one of Argentina’s finest winemakers. The estate’s location at 1,100 metres above sea level ensures the finest conditions in which to produce grapes. The altitude moderates temperature and extends the grapes’ ripening season, resulting in wines packed with vibrant fruit flavours and good natural acidity. This wine expresses all the fruitiness associated with New World Sauvignon, and was bottled early to maximise freshness.

Serving suggestion:

This wine makes a lovely aperitif lightly chilled, and a fabulous gastronomic partner to white fish dishes with citrus and herb sauces, poached or cold roast chicken and all kinds of salads, especially goat’s cheese and asparagus.

Ca’ di Alte Pinot Grigio, Italy 2014

Ca’ di Alte Pinot Grigio, Italy 2014

A lovely straw-yellow Pinot Grigio with delicate citrus, white flower and freshly baked biscuit aromas. On the palate the wine is medium bodied and balanced, with a surprisingly fruity palate and a fresh, rounded finish.

About this wine:

Ca‘ di Alte winery was created by Italian Alberto Marchisio. Although from Piemonte, Alberto has been working in the northeast Veneto region for some years and has been responsible for dramatically improving the quality of the wines at Cantina Colli Vicentini. The Pinot Grigio grapes for this wine were grown on the hills south of Vicenza, where the hillside sites ensure lower yields and better ripeness. The north-east facing vineyards are located in the volcanic Colli Berici hills, where a big difference in day and night temperatures allows the aromatic compounds of the grapes to develop.

Serving suggestion:

Serve this wine only lightly chilled to enjoy all the flavours, pairing it with soft, crumbly cow‘s milk cheeses and freshly baked walnut bread or as a great accompaniment to a light risotto.

Lorimer Chardonnay, Australia 2014

Lorimer Chardonnay, Australia 2014

A luscious golden Chardonnay with fresh-picked peach and ripe melon aromas over a lovely clean palate. Mouthwatering flavours of juicy pear and stone fruits are balanced by a subtle hint of oak.

About this wine:

Representing the new wave of wines coming out of Australia at the moment, this Chardonnay is from the Bilbul winery in South East Australia’s Riverina district. In recent years great strides have been made with varietal wines in this sun-drenched area. The grapes have been sourced from Bilbul’s own 300 hectares of vineyards and those of selected growers, based on those showing the best flavour expression. Head winemaker John Coughlan ensured that the fruit was picked with an ideal flavour spectrum, and after fermentation the wine is aged briefly in French oak to harmonise the flavours.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this flavoursome wine chilled as an aperitif or with foods such as creamy chicken or seafood pasta or fresh oysters. This wine also makes a great pairing with mild curries with coconut sauces. Drink within two years.

Domino Espinal Blanco, Spain 2014

Domino Espinal Blanco, Spain 2014

A Spanish dry white with ripe stone fruit aromas and seductive honey notes. Rich and juicy on the palate, with delicious Granny Smith, ripe peach and wild fennel flavours that makes the wine so compelling.

About this wine:

This wine is from Bodega Familia Castaño, a family-run winery in Yecla, southeast Spain who own over 410 hectares of vineyards. The climate here is rich and warm, and the grapes grow at altitude. Mariano Lopez has been a winemaker at Castaño for 21 years, and is something of an expert on the Yecla region. He harvested the Macabeo grapes – a Spanish variety also known as Viura – from vineyards located at 500 metres above sea level. The fruit was harvested at optimum ripeness and carefully fermented to extract all the fruits’ intensity. The wine was left unoaked to highlight this further.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this delicious white lightly chilled as an early evening aperitif or to wash down tapas dishes like Spanish tortilla, seafood paella or ham and cheese croquetas. Drink while it’s as young and fresh.

'le'Clos de la Motte’ Muscadet Sevreet Maine Sur Lle, Francw 2014

'le'Clos de la Motte’ Muscadet Sevreet Maine Sur Lle, Francw 2014

A young and vivid Muscadet sur lie with a delicate bouquet suggesting jasmine flowers, ripe pear and freshly baked sourdough bread. In the mouth it is juicy and vivid, with pure citrus flavours and a long, fine-textured finish.

About this wine:

Sèvre et Maine is regarded as the best district to grow the Melon de Bourgogne grape. The two rivers moderate the surrounding vineyards’ temperatures, and the distinctive gneiss soils here result in a particularly racy, fragrant style of muscadet. Owner and winemaker Véronique Günther-Chéreau selected fruit for this wine from vines that are around 65 years old. Véronique intensifies the already concentrated flavour and makes the wine ‘sur lie’ by ageing it for six months on its lees after fermentation. This adds body, richness and longevity to the fruit and give structure and depth to the finished wine.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this wine lightly chilled as the ultimate accompaniment to mussels and other fresh seafood dishes, as well as grilled white fish and light chicken dishes. It also makes a delicious aperitif. Drink within a year.
