Club Classic red wine tasting notes

La Vita Barbera d'Asti 2013

La Vita Barbera d'Asti 2013

Deep dark red wine with intense aromas of blackberry and prune, and powerful dark fruit on the palate too – satin-smooth and richly concentrated, with a streak of vigorous apple acidity keeping all the wonderful bramble flavours lifted and lively to the finish.

About this wine:

Winemaker Claudio Manera is known as the godfather of Barbera. This juicy easy-drinking grape has been beloved in Northern Italy for generations, but Claudio has devoted recent years to bringing it to a world-wide audience. Now, it not only works as an everyday wine, but as a graceful accompaniment to the finest dinner table. This bold red comes from the southwest facing Monferrato hillsides in the province of Asti.

Serving suggestion:

The purity of blackcurrant fruit in this red makes it a great match for meaty casseroles with a hint of sweetness – like Argentinean-style beef with raisins, or a lamb and apricot tagine. Or try it with roast pheasant, or a meaty pasta dish with plenty of parmesan.

Michel Torino Coleccion Pinot Noir 2013

Michel Torino Coleccion Pinot Noir 2013

Rich, perfumed red with apple and strawberry scents and an enticing toffee-sweetness. Glides across the palate with plum and strawberry smoothness followed by layers of truffle, chocolate, walnut, gentle star anise and a hint of earth. Utterly modern, yet beguilingly complex.

About this wine:

‘There are not too many wineries in the Calchaqui Valley,’ admits winemaker Alejandro Pepa. And it is true, this is very much a newly discovered ‘boutique’ area among Argentinean wine regions. Its very cold mornings and nights, combined with baking hot sunshine during the day and very little rainfall, lead to fabulous ripeness and deep flavour concentration in the grapes. Perfect conditions for Pinot Noir!

Serving suggestion:

Great for pairing with mushroom-based dishes: tartlets, risottos, stroganoffs or chicken and mushroom pies. Or try it with poached salmon, cold meats, or lamb cutlets. Perfect with rustic Burgundian-style dishes – snails in garlic butter included!

Le Petit Noir Grenache 2013

Le Petit Noir Grenache 2013

A luscious red wine, full of fresh raspberry and crushed black pepper aromas. Raspberries again on the palate, satin-smooth at first, then leading to a crisp, mulberry, bramble and pepper finish.

About this wine:

English winemaker Hugh Ryman moved to France with his family in 1974. His intent to make wine took him far and wide: after finishing his studies at Bordeaux university, he worked in Australia for a year, then travelled all over the world, making wine in over 17 different countries. For this red, he has sourced wonderfully intense Grenache fruit from gnarly 40 year old bush-vines in the Minervois.

Serving suggestion:

Great with Italian tricolore salads, pepperoni pizza or a plate of cold meats and charcuterie. It has the ripeness of fruit to pair well with pork chops, apple and sage, too. Or try this fruity red over ice, chilled, and sip it as an aperitif.

Finca Manzanos Selectión de Víctor Rioja 2011

Finca Manzanos Selectión de Víctor Rioja 2011

This ripe and succulent young rioja is packed with perfumed black cherry and raisin aromas.

About this wine:

It is beautifully balanced with soft tannins, fresh acidity and a hint of vanilla from subtle oak aging. Selección de Victor is a blend of 70% Tempranillo and 30% Garnacha made from specially selected grapes grown exclusively on the family estate. Winemakers Víctor Fernández de Manzanos and Borja Ripa Nieva have succeeded in making a modern young Rioja with a wonderful sense of place.

Serving suggestion:

This versatile red is a great match for all kinds of tapas, as well as grilled lamb cutlets, or pan-fried squid and chorizo.

Le Petit Noir Grenache 2013

Drift Point Shiraz 2012

Rich red wine filled with cranberry and fresh plum aromas. Bitter cherry, black, raisin fruit and earthy soft tannins come through on the palate along with an enticing hint of wild herbs. This fabulous Shiraz has all the creamy smoothness of a ripe New World wine, but an edge of Northern Rhône sophistication too – harking back to its Syrah cousins in France.

About this wine:

The new Shiraz wines emerging from South Africa are showing such depth and concentration that they can hardly be ignored. This majestic wine, made by Marinda Kruger van Eck, comes from Tulbagh – a bowl of vineyards surrounded by towering mountain ranges rising to over 1,500m: the Obiqua Mountains to the west, Winterhoek Mountain to the north and the Witsenberg range to the east.

Serving suggestion:

Tangy, dark wine that’s great for casseroles and barbecued burgers, and has a savoury herby note that’s great with rosemary lamb-chops or new season rack of lamb. Try it with sticky spare ribs and mature English cheeses too!

Le Petit Noir Grenache 2013

River Retreat Shiraz 2013

Deep purple-red wine with tempting aromas of dark berries and chocolate. The balance of dark cherry fruit alongside subtle notes of oak, soft tannins and silky smooth texture on the palate is sublime, and makes for an utterly delicious mouthful.

About this wine:

This Shiraz is harvested in mid- to late-January, just when these Aussie grapes are at optimum ripeness. This is earlier than most Australian wine regions due to the baking summer heat of the inland Murray-Darling region. The grapes are wonderfully natural and intensely flavoured as this hot, dry region needs little disease control or chemical use, and irrigation is only sparingly used as water is very precious here. A little French and American oak is used to round out the flavours of this deep and delicious red.

Serving suggestion:

Sip and savour on its own, or serve with grilled red meats – steak, lamb chops, venison loin or freshly-made beef-burgers. Or pair it with pizza – especially the hearty pepperoni and mushroom-based styles.
