Michel Torino Coleccion Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Bellflower Pinot Grigio 2013

A crisp and fresh white wine with zippy lemon and mineral notes. This medium bodied, dry Pinot Grigio is crammed with flavours of pears, citrus fruit and a twist of tangerine.

About this wine:

Pinot Grigio is a rare find in Chile, but is gaining in popularity due the quality of wines it is producing there. The vines from this wine were planted six years ago in the Cachapoal Valley 100km south of Santiago and close to the Andean foothills. This wine is named after Chile’s national flower, the Bellflower, an exotic flowering vine.

Serving suggestion:

A delicious wine to enjoy with potted salmon, Normandy butter and a squeeze of lemon on sourdough toast, seafood risotto or as a chilled aperitif.

Finca Manzanos Rioja Blanco 2013

Currabridge Chardonnay 2013

A medium-bodied and fruit-driven white with peach and honeydew melon characteristics. A touch of spice and nuttiness comes from the extra long lees contact in the winery.

About this wine:

The Chardonnay grapes for this wine grow on flat, easy-to-farm old rice paddy fields outside the city of Griffith in New South Wales, where mechanised harvesting ensures the fruit is delivered to the winery soon after picking. The fresh wine is fermented in oak, with a little lees contact, and a dash of Semillon (15%) is added for fullness and a nutty texture.

Serving suggestion:

This wine is great with everything from traditional roast pork and chicken to everyday pasta dishes or chunky salads with tuna or shredded crispy duck.

Herehuis Chenin Blanc 2013

Lovely golden wine with warm toast and butter aromas leading to sweet apricot, melon and ripe pear on the palate. Full of glorious fruit flavours all underpinned by a crisp tang of lime, keeping things lively.

About this wine:

Chenin Blanc is the darling white grape of South Africa and winemaker Marinda Kruger Van Eck knows just how to harness its finest flavours. She selects grapes from 20-30 year old bush vines (their extra years giving greater intensity and aroma) grown on the deep red Paardeberg soils of Paarl, where no irrigation is used and all the grapes are harvested by hand.

Serving suggestion:

Serve on its own, lightly chilled. Or partner with light dishes of grilled fish or chicken served with pasta or a fresh summer salad.

Le Petit Noir Viognier 2013

Gazzera Grillo 2013

Lovely grippy white with plenty of elegant fruit. Clean, pure, minerally aromas lead to sweet peach and taut stone-fruit flavours. A delicate twist of apricot winds its way through the palate into a lingering finish.

About this wine:

Hand-harvested from ancient chalky vineyards in the west of Sicily, this 100% Grillo has been made by winemaking duo Carlo Carparotta and Mattia Fillippi. Carlo is the local expert who knows every quirk and character of this zesty grape, and Mattia brings northern Italian finesse with his thorough knowledge of modern and international winemaking techniques.

Serving suggestion:

Great for pairing with oysters and seafood, or light chicken lunches. An especially good match with prawns; the sweetness of the prawns complements this wine’s delicate peach notes.

Veliterra Sauvignon Blanc Verdejo 2013

Elegant aromas of banana and ripe grapefruit lead to a rich tang of grapefruit on the palate, with sunny melon, citrus and mineral flavours coming through before a warm and buttery finish.

About this wine:

The Spanish vineyards of Veliterra receive a radiant 2,600 hours of sunshine a year, which combined with high altitudes, makes this ideal white wine territory. Verdejo grapes are blended with Sauvignon Blanc, before fermentation in stainless steel and three months gentle lees contact creates extra richness of texture.

Serving suggestion:

This white makes a wonderful chilled aperitif and an excellent partner for smoked salmon. Or serve with chicken dishes in a light sauce, or simply prepared poached salmon.

La Vita Barbera d'Asti 2013

Viña Palaciega Rioja Joven 2013

Classic Tempranillo aromas of minerals and strawberries along with gentle sour-cherry notes, lead to clear fruit flavours and a nutty layer of tannins on the palate. This is a gentle, mouthfilling red for easy, everyday drinking.

About this wine:

Winemaker Rodrigo Espinosa aims to be as loyal to the terroir and traditions of Rioja as possible, and so uses 100% Tempranillo for this wine. But he dips into his global experiences to make sure this red has a distinctive modern fruity style. Rodrigo has made wine in Chile, the USA and in Spain’s La Mancha region.

Serving suggestion:

Great with savoury snacks and sandwich lunches. The delicate minerality of this red also works deliciously with herbs, such as lamb chops with rosemary or roast pork with garlic and thyme.

Maravilla Carmenère 2013

Aromas of blueberries and blackberries lead to hints of chocolate, spice and coffee. On the palate there are silky dark fruit flavours, smooth tannins and a supple, lingering finish.

About this wine:

Carmenère is a special grape in Chile. Brought over by pioneering French winemakers seeking a new life in South America, the grape now thrives in the country’s bright sunshine. For this wine, Jorge Martinez Naranjo has overseen careful handpicking of the grapes, fermenting them in stainless steel and barrel-ageing the wine for four months in French oak.

Serving suggestion:

Sip and savour on its own, or pair it with hearty red meat dishes such as roast beef, slow-braised lamb shanks or venison casserole or a hearty Bolognese.

Le Petit Noir Grenache 2013

Louis Alexandre Grenache-Syrah 2013

Deliciously aromatic red apple, spice and plum aromas lead the way to soft, easy-going fruit on the palate – smooth and rounded with an attractive burnt plum finish.

About this wine:

Winemaker Eric Monin has worked his way across France from Champagne, where he began his career as a viticulturalist, to Burgundy, then the Rhône, Gascony and the Languedoc. He has settled for these Mediterranean lands known as the ‘Pays d’Oc’ or Languedoc-Roussillon, for the fabulously rich wines they give. Here he blends 65% Grenache with 30% Syrah and 5% Carignan from vines up to 30 years old. He ages this red in French oak barrels for one year before bottling.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this appealingly easy red with fresh lasagne, roast beef and rocket sandwiches, best butcher’s sausages, or a simple ham salad.

About this wine:

An award-winning blend of two classic Rhône grapes that have made themselves more than at home in the Cape – thriving in this area’s bright sunshine, diverse soils and rolling coastlands. Winemaker Marinda Kruger Van Eck has even used the age-old Rhône technique of adding a smidgeon of Viognier to the Shiraz to brighten its flavours.
