Casa Leona Chardonnay 2013

Casa Leona Chardonnay 2013

This ripe and fruity modern style of Chardonnay is bursting with peach, pineapple and yellow plum aromas over a fresh palate of succulent tropical fruit flavours.

About this wine:

One of the world’s most highly-prized wine grapes, Chardonnay has spread from its home in Burgundy to conquer the world. Of all the countries producing quality wines from it, Chile has emerged as perhaps the most successful. Sourcing perfectly ripened grapes from Chile’s dry and sunny Rapel Valley close to the Pacific Ocean, winemaker José Ignacio Cancino vinified the fruit at low temperatures to extract all its wonderfully fresh fruity character, and left the wine unoaked so it really sings from the glass.

Serving suggestion:

Lightly chilled, this wine makes a great aperitif, or partner it with savoury dishes such as salmon steaks, grilled chicken or Chinese sweet and sour vegetables.

Snapper Cove Chardonnay 2013

Snapper Cove Chardonnay 2013

With its mouthwatering flavours of ripe peach and crunchy green apple, this is a delightfully refreshing and soft-textured Australian Chardonnay.

About this wine:

Sourcing grapes from both the plains of Riverina and around the city of Orange to the west of Sydney, winemaker Corey Ryan skillfully vinified the parcels of grapes separately. Harvesting at night so the fruit reached the winery as cool and fresh as possible, Corey fermented one half of the grapes in stainless steel and the other half in French oak, balancing the two to achieve a lovely harmony between crisp fruitiness and creamy richness.

Serving suggestion:

Savour this fresh yet creamy-textured white chilled with dishes such as poached salmon in a butter and dill sauce or roast chicken with all the trimmings.

Terre di Giumara Grillo 2013

Terre di Giumara Grillo 2013

This gorgeous golden Sicilian white offers intriguing notes of lime, ripe pear and ground almond over a tingling fresh backbone of green apple and tropical fruit flavours.

About this wine:

Grillo is an historic Italian grape variety that thrives along Sicily’s south-western coast near Marsala where it is an important component of the area’s famous sweet wine. But Grillo also makes excellent dry whites when the grapes are carefully grown and vinified, such as this example from Terre di Giumara. Winemaker Giuseppe Clementi is an expert in bringing the best out of this and the island’s other indigenous grapes, creating a wine with a wonderful balance of freshness and complexity.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this characterful white lightly chilled, either as a refreshing summer aperitif or to wash down oily fish like sardines and mackerel, or pasta with seafood and herbs.

Fat Louis ‘Greetings from France’ 2013

Fat Louis ‘Greetings from France’ 2013

This rich and racy southern French white packs tangy clementine and baked lemon aromas with honeysuckle notes and quenching citrus flavours on the palate

About this wine:

Nestled in the hills north of Béziers between the larger wine producing areas of Minervois and Faugères, the St-Chinian appellation sits right in the centre of the Languedoc region. It was here that Briton Simon Whittle found himself in 1989, having left behind his lucrative financial career in search of a better quality of life. Gradually learning the craft of winemaking, Simon now makes characterful wines for Cave de Saint-Chinian, such as this little-seen St-Chinian Blanc.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this full-flavoured unoaked white while young and fresh, lightly chilled as an aperitif or alongside most fish, salad and creamy pasta dishes.

Lautarul Feteasca Regala 2013

Lautarul Feteasca Regala 2013

A floral bouquet of elderflower and acacia aromas draws you into this exotic Romanian white, while ripe peach and apricot flavours grace the delicately sweet palate.

About this wine:

Eastern Europe is something of a new frontier for winemaking. Its indigenous wines are being re-energised and talented young winemakers from all over the world are heading there to experiment. This thoroughly modern white, for instance, was made by Australian Hartley Smithers and Spaniard Nora Iriate, who’ve both worked at different wineries around the world. They’ve pooled their experiences to create a wine that’s both of its place and yet inspired by the crisp, aromatic intensity of today’s Sauvignon Blancs.

Serving suggestion:

With its lick of residual sugar, this wine pairs well with spicier dishes such as chilli prawns, Thai green curry or herby Vietnamese summer rolls.

Terres d’Artagnan, Côtes de Gascogne IGP 2013

Terres d’Artagnan, Côtes de Gascogne IGP 2013

Abundant aromas of nectarine, white peach, gooseberry and spring flowers lead to a crisp and lively palate of juicy stone fruit flavours and a fresh citrussy finish.

About this wine:

Birthplace of Charles de Batz, the man who inspired Alexandre Dumas’s famous musketeer d’Artagnan, the Gascony area of Southwest France has cultivated grapes for centuries. This mouthwatering white was made by up-andcoming local winemaker Cédric Garzuel. Blending the region’s popular Armagnac grapes Colombard and Ugni Blanc – which ripen to perfection in the area’s idyllic abundance of Atlantic- and Pyrenees-tempered sunshine – Cédric has crafted a fresh, fruity and food-friendly wine full of warm, sunny flavours.

Serving suggestion:

Nicely chilled, this summery wine makes a lovely aperitif or the perfect partner for seafood and delicate white fish dishes drizzled with lemon.

Rincon del Sol Malbec 2013

Rincon del Sol Malbec 2013

A fruity red with a vibrant ruby-purple colour, mouthwatering plum and cherry aromas and a seductively smooth palate of wild berry flavours that lingers on the palate with excellent balance.

About this wine:

This modern Malbec was made by Rodolfo ‘Opi’ Sadler, an Argentinian winemaker who truly represents what New World wine is all about. For over 30 years Opi has worked with some of his country’s best wine producers, especially in his beloved Mendoza. But he’s also amassed a great deal of international experience, working wine harvests in California, France and neighbouring Chile. All of which has given him an excellent skill at getting the best from different terroirs, as this characterful red shows.

Serving suggestion:

A meat-lover’s best friend, a Malbec like this is perfect for all kinds of grilled meats, as well as meaty pasta dishes, mildly spicy curries and semi-hard cheeses.

Casa Leona Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Casa Leona Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

This delightfully elegant red is characterised by its fragrant wild blackcurrant character, with backnotes of cherry, plum and cigar boxes adding complexity.

About this wine:

One of the world most highly-prized wine grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon has spread from its home in Bordeaux to conquer the world. Of all the countries producing quality wines from the grape, Chile has emerged as perhaps the most successful. Sourcing perfectly ripened grapes from the Rapel Valley’s dry and sunny La Palmeria vineyard close to the Pacific ocean, winemaker José Ignacio Cancino aged this wine in French oak for six months to add further complexity and depth of flavour.

Serving suggestion:

Serve this rich red with grilled steaks, roast lamb and mature cheeses. To preserve its quality the wine has only been minimally treated, so may throw a harmless sediment.

River Retreat Shiraz 2013

River Retreat Shiraz 2013

Dark berry and chocolate aromas draw you into this wonderfully tempting wine, with cherry flavours mingling with toasty oak notes and soft tannins on the silky palate.

About this wine:

The Shiraz grapes for this wine were harvested in mid-to-late January – earlier than most Australian wine regions due to the intense summer heat in the Murray-Darling basin. The winemakers captured all the grapes’ naturally fresh character by taking full advantage of the inland region’s dry heat, which ensures the vines need very little disease control and chemical use. A touch of French and American oak helps to round out the flavours of this deep and delicious red.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this powerful wine within a year, either by itself or to accompany chargrilled steaks, chops and burgers, roast venison or a spicy pepperoni and mushroom pizza.

Fat Louis ‘Road to Nowhere’ 2013

Fat Louis ‘Road to Nowhere’ 2013

Plenty of rich plum, cherry and blackberry aromas jump out at you, then the more complex flavours of bell pepper, vanilla and spice reveal themselves on the palate.

Nestled in the hills north of Béziers between the larger wine-producing areas of Minervois and Faugères, the St-Chinian appellation sits right in the centre of the Languedoc region. It was here that Briton Simon Whittle found himself in 1989, having left behind his lucrative financial career in search of a better quality of life. Gradually learning the craft of winemaking, Simon now makes mouthwatering wines for Cave de Saint-Chinian, such as this highly characterful Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lautarul Pinot Noir 2013

Lautarul Pinot Noir 2013

This textbook Pinot Noir offers an expressive wild strawberry, cherry and smokey forest-floor bouquet over a focused palate of crunchy red fruits and cheerful acidity.

About this wine:

Eastern Europe is something of a new frontier for winemaking. Its indigenous wines are being re-energised and talented young winemakers from all over the world are heading there. This exceptional Pinot Noir, for instance, was made by Australian Hartley Smithers and Spaniard Nora Iriate, who’ve both worked at different wineries around the world. They’ve pooled their experiences to create a wine that’s inspired by the great Pinots of Western Europe and the New World, as well as being totally of its place.

Enjoy this wine over the next three years alongside pasta with wild mushrooms, pork stroganoff, chicken casseroles and tomato based dishes.

Campo Castillo Garnacha 2013

Campo Castillo Garnacha 2013

This modern Spanish red turns the spotlight on the Garnacha grape, offering ripe raspberry, strawberry and floral aromas over a fruity palate with a lingering finish.

About this wine:

The conditions in Spain’s Aragon region are perfect for the Garnacha grape. Garnacha needs long, hot summers to achieve full ripeness, and the southern Aragon area of Campo de Borja provides just that. Due to the ripeness of the grapes, Garnacha wines from here are generally left unblended, such as this fine example from winemaker José Luis Chueca. Indeed, so pleased was José Luis with this particular crop of grapes, he also left this wine unoaked to display all its luscious fruit purity.

Serving suggestion:

Super versatile and easy-going, this wine would be fantastic over the next two years, either by itself or with gourmet pizzas, pasta dishes, simple casseroles and semi-hard cheeses.
