Las Corazas Tempranillo, Spain 2014

Las Corazas Tempranillo, Spain 2014

This medium-bodied Spanish red offers plenty of sweet autumn fruit (think old fashioned punnets of over-ripe strawberries), vanilla spice and warm oak flavours. The aromas are smooth and well integrated, while the flavours linger nicely

About this wine:

Tempranillo is now world-famous for being Spain’s very own noble grape variety, flourishing across the country and producing easy going, fruit forward wines. This juicy example hails from a family-owned bodega in Fuente Álamo, Castilla y León, and packs a whole lot of sunny Iberian charm. Sourcing grapes from the estate’s 30 year old vines, winemaker Joan Gonzalez aged this tempranillo briefly in American oak barrels, which adds a lovely vanillary smoothness to the fruit.

Serving suggestion:

Highly versatile with simple rustic foods, enjoy this wine with everything from grilled chorizo to a peppery Spanish omelette, slow roast shoulder of pork or spicy Mexican tacos. Drink within a year.

‘El Guardián’ Tempranillo, Spain 2014

‘El Guardián’ Tempranillo, Spain 2014

This fresh modern Rioja is a real treat if you’re used to more traditional, oakier styles. Bursting with ripe red fruit aromas, notes of liquorice and spices, this is a well structured red that’s guaranteed to put some sun in your heart.

About this wine:

The central area of the Rioja region is characterised by its red clay soils, that are high in mineral deposits, abundant continental sunshine and south-facing vineyards. It’s an area perfect for growing vines, where vignerons can easily produce well ripened grapes. They’re assisted in their efforts by El Guardián birds, which are often seen in the Rioja vineyards, eating insects and other vine pests. It’s said that the presence of El Guardián birds limits the use of insecticides and helps promote more sustainable viticultural practices.

Known as the heartland of Chilean wine, the Central Valley is perfectly suited to the cultivation of vines. Lying between the Andes and Pacific coast, the region stretches from Santiago to Bío Bío and enjoys many diverse microclimates. The Mapuche people, the indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile, hold the land of the Central Valley in great regard, and once knew it as ‘Ketrawe’ meaning noble land that delivers its fruits under the wise hand of man. About this wine:

South Africa’s Western Cape includes the dry land wine regions of Swartland, Paarl and Stellenbosch, where the decomposed granite soils, abundant sunshine and cooling coastal influence help grapes ripen with great winemaking potential. Fedelo Bianco, Italy 2014

Fedelo Bianco, Italy 2014

A lively everyday dry white from Sicily bursting with tropical fruit and citrus aromas. With its crisp acidity and luscious fresh fruit flavours, this a real go-to wine, fruity enough to sip on its own yet brisk enough to pair with all sorts of foods.

About this wine:

This delicious white hails from Trapani on the west coast of Siciliy, a sun-kissed area north of Marsala where the grapes ripen to perfection, cooled by Mediterranean sea breezes. Winemaker Stefano Chioccioli sourced indigenous Catarratto, Inzolia and Grecanico grapes for this wine from some of area’s best vineyards, vinifying the fruit separately at cool temperatures to extract all their mouthwatering aromas and crisp acidity. After blending, the wine was left to mature on its lees to develop its rich tropical fruit flavours. No oak was used.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy it lightly chilled as an early evening aperitif, or match it with your favourite Mediterranean seafood and white fish dishes like juicy prawns, scallop and chorizo salad or chicken with pesto. Best drunk as young as possible.

Wombarra Australian Chardonnay, Australia 2014

Wombarra Australian Chardonnay, Australia 2014

A delectably dry Aussie Chardonnay with a signature straw-yellow colour and washes of ripe stonefruit, especially peach. It offers notes of subtle toasty oak on the nose while, on the palate, it is mouthwatering and fresh with a good balance and lingering finish.

About this wine:

The New South Wales coastal region of Riverina enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate and sandy loam soils that vary in colour and structure from red sandy earths to brown clay loams, making it a veritable haven for Chardonnay vines to grow. Due to the scale of the vineyards and the hot summer temperatures, the vines are machine harvested during the cool of the night to retain their varietal flavours. Winemaker Joel Veenhuizen used warm fermentation temperatures to bring out the clean fruit characters of the grapes, maturing 10% of the wine in French oak to add depth and richness.

Serving suggestion:

Enjoy this seductive Chardonnay well-chilled as an aperitif or as a complement to seafood, particularly pan-fried king prawns or creamy pasta with smoked salmon.
