TEXTURE
TRICKS TO
MASTER

Need to give your look a refresh? Cosy but cool textures will take your wardrobe to the next level, says menswear editor Ian Wright

Be a knit picker

Created as a functional garment for mariners (its raised weave captured air to keep them warm while at sea), cable knits are having a renaissance. Now their role is more decorative, with each particular pattern offering an individual style statement.

For something a little less rugged, look to finer wools, in an array of finishes. The bonded wool mac adds a sleek finish to the softer jumper and trousers, all topped off with a plush cashmere scarf.

Release the hounds(tooth)

One of menswear’s standout patterns, classic houndstooth has had a revival, going from traditional to on-trend in a flash. Suiting used to be the only place you’d see the broken check shapes; now they’ve taken a bite out of more casual styles, like this wool bomber jacket, a key piece for this season and beyond. Matching the sleeves to the trousers subtly brings the look together.

Go with the grain

Great men’s outfits often start from the shoes up, and where better to wear texture than with a pair of tactile Derbies. Made from beautiful full-grain leather, these striking shoes make a strong statement – combine them with fine ribbed socks, and the touchy-feely effect has double the impact. The selvedge edge of the denim enhances the premium quality of the look.

Tweak your look ac-cord-ingly

From pin to jumbo, the scale of cords can vary, which allows for interesting combinations – get a handle on the clashes by picking one unifying colour and letting the texture do the rest. Contrast shirt buttons and a woven belt lift the matchy-matchy ensemble.
