Why is this L size based on Waist size and not Chest size like most other clothes?

I bought on line in the Sale. Not a quality item No wonder it was in the sale. The material skimped. Only suitable for a very lean tall person Looked so much better in the picture

Bought this for husband as a gift.It was very thin but a good colour and fit. Kept it as it was OK for price. The day after I ordered it they reduced again which was also disappointing. Due to the poor quality material I am unsure how it will wash but will wait and see. Not the usual M and S quality.

Bought this to take away on our holidays to Norway not to thick to wrap into case, but will keep out the cold when I need this to sit on our balcony of our Cruise holiday. Lovely colour very serviceable

Lightweight, warm and good quality. Fit is good although all dressing gowns are very generous for my size.

This dressing gown looks very thick and cosy on the pictures, it is however made from thin fleece material, My husband says that it is okay but would not be thick enough for the winter months.
