Stuck on what to wear to the races? Jonathan Swartland, Men’s Suits Buyer at M&S, says, ‘You have to look smart, but this year stand out from the crowd by being bolder and fresher with colour, opting for neutrals, indigos and rich navy instead of grey, whether in a sharp, modern suit or a softer linen jacket and trousers combination. And why not finish it off with a colourful pocket square, for added elegance.’
The Look: Bold and out there
Choose a flamboyant but formal outfit designed to get attention, such as an Autograph 3 piece suit, bold stripe or floral shirt and pocket hankie. The high roller style is all about exuding confidence in a striking suit so be sure to go bold all the way with accessories, be it the tie, the shoes or the cufflinks.
The Look: Extremely formal
If you’re heading to the Royal Box this year, be prepared to get your tails on. Gentlemen are usually required to wear either a black or grey morning suit, including a waistcoat and top hat. To really finish off the look you could include a pair of white gloves with a handkerchief to match.
The Look: Semi-formal
If you want to go formal but prefer a lighter summery look, a linen suit would be a good option. Opt for linen co-ordinates that wear well, with a formal but simple white or sky shirt. A club-stripe tie and pocket hankie are ideal for the formal summer look.
The Look: Smart casual
The smart casual look is accepted at a handful of racing events so if you want to go more relaxed, why not opt for a navy blazer, chinos and an open-neck button down shirt. This will give you the ultimate smart casual look.
