There’s a rebellious edge this season, but don’t be put off by its retro influence, says Michelle Pamment – this is an entirely modern, wearable statement
T he fashion industry has a habit of throwing us a curveball each season and on the autumn/winter 2013 catwalks, the spirit of punk prevailed. The graphic impact of block-colour black, white and red – seen in bold checks and modern reworks of dogtooth – was a key feature, as was leather. But while London Calling inevitably conjures images of style of the past, in 2013 it’s more about enhancing your look with a little extra attitude. This can be as simple as some tough accessories. Adopt clean, optical prints, broken up by blurred textures and animal prints, which will help to introduce neutral tones.
How to work the trend
Catwalks were full of edgy references with hints of retro styling. Saint Laurent and Givenchy took inspiration from spirited rebels, while at Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, there was a more polished approach.
This season is all about neat, ladylike silhouettes, flattering dresses and pencil skirts
