Full bodied with fine, soft tannins and well balanced acidity. The nose has complex aromas of graphite, smoke and leather, on the palate soft raspberry and summer fruits give way to a long, smooth, spicy finish.
ABOUT THIS WINE: Norrel Robertson is a trained winemaker and Master of Wine who has been working in Spain for the last ten harvests. Home is Calatayud, once a thriving, enormous vineyard in the Aragon region of Spain.
Now much smaller it is certainly making a comeback, partly due to Norrel's skill and enthusiasm but also because of the region's natural capacity to produce rich concentrated reds from knarled old Garnacha and Tempranillo vines grown in inaccessible vineyards at altitude. If ever there was a red that over-delivered, this is it.
SERVING: This robust red is crying out for a full-on barbecue, or tapas. Roast meats such as duck or lamb would also be a perfect match.

Chateau La Roche Bordeaux 2010:
Lively, ripe red Bordeaux with smooth blackberry and plum fruit, a sassy kick of acidity and a hint of chocolate. There's a thread of rich tannins too, giving the wine a gentle structure. Zingy and vibrant - not heavy and overbearing - this juicy red is a breath of fresh air.
ABOUT THIS WINE: Made by a young, 37-year old winemaker who really appreciates the natural vibrancy of Bordeaux's grape varieties. In this wine he has ignored the region's tradition for more serious structured reds and let the flavours of the Merlot (60% of the blend) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) really shine. His key techniques have been to use a non-aggressive maceration and to leave the wine un-oaked.
